The New York Cosmos Hire Eric Cantona as Ambitious MLS Bid Takes Flight

new york cosmos eric cantonaMembers of the New York Cosmos' office staff -- the only people currently employed by the soccer club without a team -- began arriving at their Manhattan headquarters at 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Selling a product that doesn't exist is mighty hard work.

By that time, the British media already was in a lather over the late-night announcement that the company/logo had hired former Manchester United forward, Nike pitchman, occasional actor and dime-store philosopher Eric Cantona as director of soccer.

Video: Emotional Roethlisberger takes in 'how awesome it is'

When it was over and the impact of the moment hit Ben Roethlisberger, he took a knee and buried his head in his towel. Eight months ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback was at the center of a criminal investigation and his reputation was taking a beating in the local and national press. Now he's going back to the Super Bowl, his third appearance in the last six seasons.

When asked why he broke down, Roethlisberger said that he was overcome by "just how awesome it is."

From a football standpoint, he's right. With a win against the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV, Roethlisberger would join the rarefied air of starting quarterbacks with three Super Bowl rings, joining Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Troy Aikman and Tom Brady. He'll be a surefire Hall of Famer by the time he reaches his 29th birthday and get his name in the "best in the game" discussion that always seems to revolve around Brady and Peyton Manning.

[Video: Questionable touchdown helps out Steelers]

From a personal standpoint, he's also right. Roethlisberger has every reason to revel in how things have swung for him over the past few months. In March, he was under investigation. In April, he was suspended for six games to start the season. (It was later dropped to four.) In September, he watched his team get out to a 3-1 start without him. Why shouldn't he feel overwhelmed that he just went out and won the third AFC championship of his young career?

[Related: Good news for Steelers heading into the Super Bowl]

But I get the sense that some are going to try to turn this into a redemption story, as if Roethlisberger's continued on-field success has some relation to his off-field troubles. Bet on the fact that somebody will make the point that his making the Super Bowl is a sign that he's matured as a person. Don't fall into that trap. We're too quick to canonize someone because they win a game.

US Coach Bob Bradley Begins Building National Team Foundation Against Chile

us chile usa chile u.s. national team soccer juan agudelo teal bunburyCARSON, Calif. -- For the casual fan of the U.S. national team, Saturday's match against Chile probably seemed a bit unusual. Where was Landon Donovan? Why wasn't the game on English-language TV? Who the heck is Mikkel Diskerud, and why is everyone calling him "Mixx?"

The simple answers to these questions are that Landon Donovan is in Los Angeles preparing for the upcoming MLS season.

The game wasn't on television because ESPN is contracted to show a certain number of matches annually and this one wasn't selected.

And Mikkel Diskerud is a promising 20-year-old midfielder from Oslo whose American mother (hence his U.S. passport) nicknamed him "Mixx" when he was a child.

The reason for all of this confusion? The game against Chile was basically a scrimmage -- the international soccer equivalent of a JV game. Which is why Landon Donovan was given the night off. And why ESPN chose not to air the game. And why Diskerud got the start instead of Michael Bradley or Clint Dempsey or Stuart Holden.

Antonio Cromartie goes pottymouth on Tom Brady

A day after the New England Patriots vowed that they wouldn't get involved in a media war of words, New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie went the other way.

Choosing profanity and name-calling as his weapons of choice, Cromartie has escalated the pregame babble battle. Jets head coach Rex Ryan complained Tuesday about Brady's alleged habit of pointing to the opposing bench after scoring a touchdown. Cromartie expanded on the thought to Gary Myers of the New York Daily News.

"We see that a lot. He does it a lot," Cromartie said. "That's the kind of guy he is. We really don't give a damn, to tell you the truth."

Okay, what kind of guy is Brady?

"An ass----.

"---- him."

My goodness. Are you done, Antonio? No? You've got more? Continue, then.

"That's what I think about him. I don't really give a damn about him," he said. "I don't have to play against him. I play against the receivers."

Well, Brady is the one throwing to those receivers. "Yeah, but if I beat the s--- out of his receivers, he can't throw the ball," Cromartie said.

I see three problems here for Cromartie.

First, he does have to play against Brady. Those receivers he's going to beat the [expletive] out of? They don't exist in a vacuum. Tom Brady throws footballs to them, and he's pretty good at doing it in a way that makes cornerbacks look bad.

Second, looking bad has been a specialty of Cromartie's recently. Pierre Garçon lit him up on Saturday. Cameras caught head coach Rex Ryan openly scolding Cromartie on the sidelines.

And third, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick aren't above a little vindictive behavior of their own. They might not talk about it beforehand, but I promise you that they've noticed Cromartie's comments and will respond in their own way. Cromartie just earned himself a little extra time being studied in the Patriots' film room.

For a guy who gets beaten pretty regularly, that may not have been the best idea.

O.J. Mayo Suspended 10 Games for Testing Positive for DHEA

O.J. MayoMEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- The NBA has suspended guard O.J. Mayo 10 games without pay for violating the league and union's anti-drug program with a positive test.

The league announced the suspension Thursday for Mayo's positive test for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Mayo's suspension will start Friday night when the Grizzlies visit Philadelphia, and he will be able to return Feb. 15 also against the 76ers in Memphis.

Mayo said in a statement released by the team that he is extremely disappointed he will miss 10 games as the Grizzlies are making a push for the playoffs. He blamed an over the counter supplement that he didn't know was banned by the NBA for the positive test.

"It was an honest mistake, but I take full responsibility for my actions," Mayo said in the statement released by the team. "I apologize to my fans, teammates and the Grizzlies organization for regrettably not doing the necessary research about what supplements I can put in my body."

EPL Injuries: Can Arsenal Still Life a Trophy After Nasri Gets Injured?

Every year as the business end of the season approaches, one particular team is hit by a spate of injuries to their core players that results in the premature death of their title race. For several seasons now this team has had fate play cruel tricks on their players that leave them wounded. That team is Arsenal.

This year is no different. Just when things seemed to be going right, Samir Nasri picks up an injury.

On Sunday, as Arsenal played Huddersfield in a crucial FA Cup tie, Nasri picked up a hamstring injury when chasing down a long ball. Wenger has expressed his regret in playing the Frenchman, but the damage has already been done.

Samir Nasri has been, without a shadow of a doubt, Arsenal’s best player so far this season and has inspired Arsenal to many a victory.

He overcame the disappointment of being left out of France’s World Cup squad and has been firing on all cylinders. He has scored an extremely impressive 14 goals for Arsenal this season, but it’s not only the goals he has been plundering in. His overall play has undergone a massive change, and he has been an extremely influential player in Arsenal’s midfield.

In the absence of Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie, he rose to the occasion and led Arsenal to several key victories. He has started delivering the goods consistently. There has been no denying that Nasri has always had potential to become one of the world’s best midfielders, but he has too often been extremely inconsistent and dazzled in glimpses.

This season he has been a totally different player. He has set up goals, his linkup play has been exquisite and contributions to the team have been immense.

In the past couple of weeks we have gotten an idea of Arsenal’s first choice team. Alex Song and Jack Wilshere fill in the defensive midfielder roles. Nasri and Theo Walcott play on the flanks while Fabregas plays the central midfielder role. Van Persie starts as Arsenal’s forward.

This team has been extremely impressive and has dominated teams including teams with the caliber of Chelsea. It looked like the real deal and the entire team was playing with a chemistry that was a joy to watch.

They linked up well with each other. Arsenal looked like real championship material when fielding this particular team.

Now with Nasri out it affects the entire team. Not only have Arsenal lost his brilliance and spark the momentum that has been generated over the past month has all gone. His absence affects Arsenal’s overall style of play.

Now Arsene Wenger faces a dilemma of who to field in his place. Should he play the brilliant, effective and yet lazy Russian Andrei Arshavin or should he start with either Marouane Chamakh or Nicklas Bendtner to partner Van Persie up front.

No matter whom he decides to field, the change in play is going to be evident and Arsenal risk losing all the momentum built over the past few weeks. Not only that, but in a few weeks time, Arsenal play Barcelona in a crucial Champions League fixture.

If Arsenal are to beat the Catalan giants they will need a fit and firing squad. They will definitely miss Nasri in their midfield.

Barcelona are the world’s best team in the world right now and Arsenal have the quality to put up a great fight and even possibly win it. But for that, they require a full strength squad, which is a luxury they no longer have.

This isn’t the first time Arsenal have had injuries affect their title challenge. Last season Arsenal were just four points behind leaders Chelsea when their title push collapsed.

The reason??

At that point Arsenal had close to seven first team players injured. These included Van Persie, Fabregas, Arshavin, Ramsey and the first choice centre back pairing of Vermaelen and Gallas.

One can’t help but get the feeling that had it not been for injuries Arsenal could have lifted a trophy last season.

Three years back it was an injury to Eduardo that ended Arsenal’s title hopes. Eduardo had been superb in his first season at the Emirates and was scoring consistently. Then he had his leg broken in a match against Birmingham. After that, Arsenal never, especially mentally.

That injury took place when Arsenal were leading the table by five points. Arsenal went onto finish third, falling short by four points.

In the past few years, Arsenal have rarely been able to field a full strength squad often having two or three players injured at the least.

Sure, injuries are a part of the game, but no other team has suffered from injuries like the Gunners. This has been one of the primary reasons for Arsenal’s trophy drought.

Although Arsenal’s trophy drought cannot be blamed on injuries alone, it is extremely tough for a team to win with the spine of their team injured. Arsenal find themselves in this same situation almost every season.

Luck is essential to any successful title challenge and Arsenal have been lacking this key ingredient for several seasons now.

This time, it looked like Vermaelen would be the only player to be injured come February, but sadly it was not to be.

With Nasri injured, Arsenal finds itself in the very situation they were so desperate to avoid.

Now Arsenal can only hope they are not hit by any more injuries and can continue to challenge for titles.

They have the talent and the squad but if the injuries continue to happen, they will find themselves in a similar situation from previous seasons.

Judge orders former NFL player to surrender championship ring

Former NFL defensive end Chidi Ahanotu was forced by a judge this week to surrender his 2002 NFC championship ring to help pay a $130,000 debt to his ex-wife's lawyers, The Tampa Tribune reported.

Ahanotu, who played for the St. Louis Rams the year the team was upset by the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, will have to give up his ring or risk being jailed. He has been resistant to part with the memento, claiming it's only worth $500, not the $10,000 his ex-wife's lawyers believe they can get for it.

[Rewind: NBA star raffles off championship ring]

Tuesday's ruling ends a long courtroom battle over possession of the ring. Ahanotu claimed in court that he gave the ring to his brother in 2007. He later admitted that he still had it after lawyers discovered a hastily written will that Ahanotu made up days after he was initially forced to give up the ring in September.

The long-time Tampa Bay Buccaneers defender also told the judge that the original ring was in his pocket during that first court hearing, but later revealed it was a replica. He had exchanged the original yellow gold ring for one made of white gold.

[Another costly divorce: Tiger Woods lost hundreds of millions]

"This court system is a farce," he said after Tuesday's hearing, as reported by the Tribune. "This court wants a man to hand over his once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment to pay some damn attorney's fees? I could see if it was going to pay something for my children or my ex-wife.''

Oh, that pesky American court system, forcing a man to pay his exorbitant debts. How dare they! What's next, holding him accountable for lying in court about giving the ring to his brother?

Look at the bright side, Chidi. If Mike Martz had used Marshall Faulk properly in that upset loss to the Patriots, you'd also be giving away a Super Bowl ring.

Jim O'Brien Fired by Pacers

Jim O'Brien has been fired by the Pacers.

Team president Larry Bird announced the firing Sunday, saying: "This isn't all on Jim. All of us share in the responsibility for where we're at and where we need to go."

Assistant coach Frank Vogel will take over the team on an interim basis.

O'Brien and the Pacers sport a 17-27 record, ranking 10th in the East. The team is also reeling of late, losing their past eight games.

The reported firing comes just one week after Bird told FanHouse's Chris Tomasson that O'Brien's job was safe for the remainder of the season. The Star

O'Brien was 121-169 in four seasons with the Pacers. Despite the poor output, the Pacers' best player in his coaching days was Danny Granger - an All-Star talent, but more help was clearly needed as players such Roy Hibbert and Darren Collison continue to struggle.

Vogel has been a scout for the Los Angeles Lakers and Washington Wizards, and also served as an assistant coach for O'Brien in Philadelphia and Boston.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Will this NBA season be a coronation for Miami Heat's three kings?

The arrival of LeBron James and Chris Bosh to a team already boasting Dwyane Wade has raised their championship hopes

The Miami Heat became the most talked-about franchise in basketball in the lead-up to the new NBA season. They tempted "King" LeBron James (frequently regarded as the greatest basketball player in the world) and Chris Bosh (one of the best in the world in his position) from the bleak climbs of Cleveland and Toronto respectively to the scorching warmth of Miami, where they have joined fans favourite Dwyane Wade, who signed a six-year contract extension and is equally regarded as one of the best players in the NBA. These deals are the equivalent of having Pel, Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff in the same side at their peak. The three were introduced to Heat fans in a typically giant American spectacle, one that seemed more suited to the last night of Glastonbury.

Unsurprisingly, great success is expected of the new-look Heat, with James and Bosh having the added incentive to triumph as they are yet to win a championship, with Wade having won only one, back in 2006. But as hope rises in Miami, expectations tumble in Cleveland where following the departure James, the home team are not expected to even reach the play-offs. The Cavaliers had been trying to build a championship-winning team around LeBron since they drafted him into the side as the No1 pick in 2003, but now there will have to be a major re-think regarding tactics and strategy. However, it is hard not to feel a degree of sympathy for James, who was understandably frustrated being regarded as the best player in the NBA but with only one play-off finals appearance to his name ? a 4-0 defeat against the San Antonio Spurs in 2007. Surely he had the right to search for glory after so many disappointing seasons in Ohio?

James's move has upset not only the people of Cleveland, but fans of teams across the league. That was evident on Tuesday night as the Heat kicked-off their season at a sold-out TD Garden in Boston, where the Celtic crowd proceeded to boo the 25-year-old every time he touched the ball. The Heat went on to lose the game 88-80.

As James said himself during pre-season, it may take until January before the team fully gels which is perhaps understandable. Therefore, the fact James and co were less than convincing in Boston is no major shock. Also, it is easy to forget the Heat were up against last season's play-off runners-up, who were only beaten by the LA Lakers in the final game of the finals.

The Celtics are in some ways the opposite to the Heat: they have experience of winning championships and a team in which each player knows his role, and it was this which proved the difference on Tuesday. Miami were particularly poor in the first half, with their "Three Kings" looking more like three peasants, managing between them just 10 turnovers in the entire game.

However, for all the mistakes and disappointments of the three men most people were watching, it is easy to forget how good the Celtics were. Their defence was solid and in Rajon Rondo the hosts had the man who created the third highest number of assists on the opening day of any NBA season.

James, though, still shone and almost brought the Heat back into the game single-handedly in the third quarter as what was a 19-point lead for the Celtics was eventually reduced to three as he went on to finish with 31 points.

The Celtics followed victory over Miami with a surprise 95-87 loss against the Cavaliers 24 hours later. But despite the defeat, Doc Rivers's men are likely to remain a force to be reckoned with throughout this season. Last season's runners-up have added to their already impressive squad with one of the biggest names in sport; the larger-than-life centre Shaquille O'Neal, who also decided to leave Cleveland. Shaq may be reaching the end of his career ? or as he calculated in his first press conference, his "final 730 days" ? but he remains a force to be reckoned with.

With the high expectations surrounding Miami and Boston it is easy to overlook other contenders in the Eastern Conference, such as the Orlando Magic, last season's conference runners-up who boast probably the best centre in the league in Dwight Howard, who, like James and Bosh, has found a championship ring elusive. Also, New York will be hoping for a big season after signing offensive powerhouse Amar'e Stoudemire, a player Knicks fans will hope can push their team into the play-offs for the first time since the 2003-04 season.

Kobe Bryant's LA Lakers, meanwhile, have returned from their excursion to London for the European tour earlier this month and as usual will be expected to lead the running in the Western Conference. They have made few acquisitions over the summer, although having won back-to-back championships they may see no need to tinker with a winning formula. Bryant's play-off success has been somewhat overshadowed by James and his summer move, although with yet another championship ring under his belt, the 32-year-old has further cemented his legacy.

There will be much interest in how Oklahoma City Thunder begin the season as much is expected of the explosive young forward Kevin Durant, whom many pundits consider to be a strong challenger for James's MVP title in the coming years. Little was expected of the Thunder at the beginning of last season yet surprisingly they flourished under the direction of Coach of the Year Scott Brooks off the court and Durant, the NBA's Scoring Champion, on it.

Interest will follow the Washington Wizards as observers caste an eye over how the No1 draft pick John Wall performs under the NBA spotlight, especially after performing well during pre-season. Gilbert Arenas also returns to the side on 27 January after serving his ban for firearms offences. Whether he is still a fan favourite is yet to be seen, but either way Wizards fans will expect a great deal from him this year.

Interest in the new NBA season is, then, enormous. Miami remain favourites to lift the play-off trophy next summer but any of the teams that reach the play-offs are likely to pose a serious threat to the Heat.

Today is #LETUSPLAY Day, and I refuse to celebrate

You probably woke up today and thought it would be just another average Tuesday. It's not, though. Today is very special. There's an online movement happening today.

I know! I'm excited, too, because online movements are always so awesome and effective.

Today is #LETUSPLAY Day, because the NFLPA has declared it so. #LETUSPLAY Day is a special day in which you, the loyal NFL fan, are asked to change your Facebook status, post #LETUSPLAY messages on Twitter and to sign an online petition, which, like all other online petitions, will be very important and consequential.

If you're so inclined, you can read more about what the NFLPA wants you to do here.

Myself, I'm saying no. No, I'm sorry, you don't get to have a #LETUSPLAY day. Instead, how about every day be declared #SHUTUPANDWORKITOUTDAY until you people can decide on the best way to divide up your billions?

How dare you ask people to "do [their] part as a fan," as if it's the fans who aren't doing enough here. You know what a fan's job is? It's to watch and enjoy this game. To spend money on tickets, television packages and merchandise. To submit our eyeballs to commercials before and after every single kickoff in a game.

You know that gigantic pile of money you guys can't decide how to divide? That came from us. That was us, doing our part. It is not our part to take a side in your petty battle over who gets to roll around in more of that money.

This is not me taking a side in the lockout. This is me resenting even being asked to take a side. My side is "shut up, work it out, and play football." I don't care what you do or how you do it. I don't even want to know. Quit trying to win sympathy and just figure it out.

How we see Saturday's games

Ravens vs. Steelers

MJD: This game is the reason that I hate making predictions. There's so much hatred, and the games between these teams are so close. It's like throwing 35 different explosive substances into a fireworks warehouse, then trying to predict what will happen when you drop in a match.

The best thing I have to rely on here is a hunch, and my hunch says this turns into a game unlike what everyone expects it to be. Everyone expects it to be close. I'm saying blowout. I'll go Steelers, 31-13. If you need me to justify that, here: The Steelers had a week off, their defense is more dominant than Baltimore's, and I still trust Roethlisberger way more than I trust Flacco.

But absolutely nothing would surprise me here.

Chris Chase: The return of bitter NFL rivalries has been my favorite part of the NFL season. Players never seem to care about hating division rivals like fans do. The world and the league are a smaller place now and all these players have crossed paths in high school all-star games and college and in the pros. They don't despise each other like they used to. It seemed like the days when George Allen could stand in the Redskins locker room and get his players to say things like "die you Dallas dogs" were long gone.

But the Ravens and Steelers are old school. They can't stand each other and it shows during their games. The hits are harder, the celebrations a little more animated. I love it.

It's an especially good rivalry because unlike whatever the Patriots and Jets have going on, there's a mutual respect between these teams. The Pats don't think they can lose on Sunday. The Steelers are well aware they can on Saturday.

I'm with MJD on this one though: expect the unexpected. Everyone is anticipating a taut, defensive battle, but I'm going with veritable offensive explosion (relatively so, of course). It'll be like the exact opposite of the BCS championship, except that a shady quarterback will be on the winning end of both. Steelers 30, Ravens 24.

Doug Farrar: Last year, I wrote that Steelers-Ravens has replaced Patriots-Colts as the NFL’s best rivalry, and the only people who believe that Patriots-Jets is somehow in the same ballpark need to put the last Baltimore-Pittsburgh games on a loop. It’s the football equivalent of two slightly different, but equally matched, twin brothers beating the crap out of each other three times a year.

It’s a very appealing series of matchups, as well – the highly underrated versatility of Ray Rice versus the Steelers’ league-best run defense; the pass rush of Baltimore versus Ben Roethlisberger’s absolute refusal to hit the turf unless there are more than four defenders on his back. Mike Wallace has replaced Santonio Holmes as the Steelers’ deep threat; now, he’s the league’s best in that same department. Ray Lewis is a bit tougher to replace. Still playing at a ridiculously high level after all these years, Lewis has a legitimate claim to the title of best linebacker the game has ever seen. Baltimore’s smash-mouth style against Pittsburgh’s undersold passing attack. Mike Tomlin against John Harbaugh. If you don’t like this, it’s safe to say that you dropped a football gene along the way somewhere.

In the third game between the two combatants, I expect the Steelers to pull it out by the usual field goal or less. Baltimore’s pass defense is still full of question marks, and somewhere in the fourth quarter, I expect Roethlisberger (perhaps with another ridiculously broken nose) to lead the drive that breaks Baltimore’s heart. Like him or not (and I lean toward the latter opinion for a host of reasons), it seems to be what the man was pre-engineered to do.

Packers vs. Falcons

Chris Chase: All of my thoughts about this game are captured in this 90-second rap song by B.O.B. about the game.

That's more cogent analysis than anything I expect out of Terry Bradshaw in the pregame. Bobby Ray hits on the three key questions: How will Aaron's aim be? How ready will Clay be? And will Matt Ryan be able to take that talon out of A.J. Hawk's hands? I'm worried that James Starks is a one-hit wonder and I'm tempted by Ryan's 19-2 home record in Atlanta. But I still like Green Bay (30-20), mainly because the Packers are holding the wild card.

Doug Farrar: The concern for the Falcons in this game should be that, according to Football Outsiders’ advanced metrics, their run defense has been the league’s least efficient in the season’s second half. This factoid leads me to believe that Packers running back James Starks could transcend his current one-game-wonder status, and put up some happy totals for the Packer faithful early on.

And if Aaron Rodgers now has the benefit of play action after playing at a ruthless level all through the regular season without any run game at all, the Packers become a team I’d bet to beat anyone but the New England Patriots. It’s all they’ve been missing all year. Their defense is ridiculous and Rodgers is one of the league’s best. You put a rushing attack in there against a team that has been playing not to lose a little too often, and I think we have an interesting little upset on our hands.

MJD: I see both of these teams as a little underrated; at least, as underrated as teams can be when they're both generally acknowledged as the two best teams in the conference. Anyway, I think they've both played Super Bowl-caliber football late in the season and are legitimate contenders to get the big silver trophy at the end.

I'm hesitantly going with Green Bay here, though. In the end, I think they've just got a liiiiiiiiittle bit more firepower on both sides of the ball, particularly if James Starks can turn in a repeat performance. I think the bigger factor here is that Green Bay is a little better equipped to slow down Atlanta's offense than vice versa. Packers, 27-14.

Upsets Abound on Black Saturday -- Who Should Be Worried?

Eleven ranked teams lost in what we could call Black Saturday. No. 16 Minnesota lost to No. 12 Purdue and No. 11 Missouri was beaten by No. 7 Texas. But what about the other nine? Did we see something Saturday that should raise the proverbial red flag? College basketball editors Ray Holloman and Matt Snyder weigh in with an impromptu roundtable, checking in with each team that was upset, in order of which they occurred.

Cancer patient snubbed by Rodgers comes out in his defense

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was under fire this weekend when a local news station showed a clip of him brushing past a cancer patient desperate for his autograph. But just as the criticism was intensifying, an unlikely source came to Rodgers' defense: the very woman he ignored, Jan Cavanaugh.

Before you rush to judgment, watch the video that started the firestorm:

This led to a bunch of self-serving hand-wringing in the media, particularly from NBC's Mike Florio, who wrote that Rodgers treated Cavanaugh like a "panhandler with leprosy" and insinuated that the quarterback was a bad person for ignoring the autograph request.

[Related: 'Glee' star apologizes to young actress after autograph snub

Cavanaugh heard comments like this and responded to the local ABC affiliate, WBAY. From an article on the station's website

The video has drawn criticism but the only people Jan is critical of today are those creating the chatter.

"I am very unhappy with people making so much out of this, because this really isn't that big of a deal. It's up to the players to decide who they want to give an autograph to, and that's their prerogative."

Just a week earlier, Rodgers autographed Jan's pink jersey bearing the number 12 as the team departed for Philadelphia. A few years ago the now-star quarterback signed a number of things for her, too.

Not surprising that a woman fighting cancer with a positive outlook has a solid perspective on things.

The Florios of the world are correct when they say that NFL players owe their fame and riches to fans and, as a result, should be accommodating to them whenever possible. But to suggest that Aaron Rodgers needs to sign every single autograph for every person isn't a reasonable request.

[Related: Aaron Rodgers poses for pictures on sideline during playoff win]

Don't judge Rodgers based on this one incident. Are you perfect every second of every day? Would you want people forming opinions about you based on how you live every second of your life? Maybe he had just gotten into an argument with his girlfriend. Maybe he ate some bad sushi. Maybe he was late for the plane. There are plenty of reasons he could have brushed past Cavanaugh, all of which are more plausible than "he doesn't care about cancer patients."

When I first read about this incident, I immediately thought of a touching "Make-A-Wish" segment that aired on "SportsCenter" earlier this year. You know, the one where Rodgers went above and beyond to make sure that a 13-year-old heart transplant patient had the time of her life at Packers training camp. Strange that nobody who's ripping Rodgers is mentioning that clip this week.

[Related: McDonald's employee fired for helping NFL star]

The ESPN segment doesn't mean Rodgers is a great guy. But it's far more of an indication as to his character than a split-second incident at an airport.

Bears/Packers is the toughest ticket in Chicago sports history

That's the word from area ticket brokers, in advance of this Sunday's NFC championship game between the bitter division rivals. From the Chicago Tribune:

Several brokers said tickets for Sunday's NFC championship game at Soldier Field are by far the most in demand in Chicago sports history, creating a frenetic online market as Bears fans try to decide how much it's worth to see the big game live.

On Monday, $134 seats in the upper reaches of Soldier Field were selling for about $500 each, according to brokers and several ticket resale Web sites. Seats in the stadium's lower levels are going for up to $2,000, said Melissa Janes, who works for a Chicago-area ticket broker.

The "most in demand in Chicago sports history." And "by far"? That's a pretty bold claim. It's not like we're talking about a city that's light on sports history.

[Related: The most expensive tickets in sports]

Rocky Marciano made his first title defense in Chicago against Jersey Joe Walcott. The Bears have made two Super Bowl runs before, in '85 and in '06. The Bulls had a moderately successful run with a gentleman named Michael Jordan. The unrequited love the city has for the Cubs has made for some very hot tickets. The Blackhawks have won four Stanley Cups. The White Sox are recent World Series champs. Chicago has had some tough tickets before.

And this Sunday's game stands out among all those as the hottest ticket in Chicago sports history? That's difficult to wrap my head around. I'm not even sure I believe it. If it's true or even close to true, it speaks to the intensity of this Bears/Packers rivalry.

NBA's New Jersey Nets to play Toronto Raptors in London

? Regular-season games will be played on 4 and 5 March
? NBA looking to expand ahead of 2012 London Games

The NBA announced plans today for its first competitive matches in England when the New Jersey Nets will play Toronto Raptors on 4 and 5 March as the league seeks to expand professional basketball globally ahead of the London 2012 Olympics.

David Stern, the NBA commissioner, said: "To me this is the next step in the progression leading up to the London Olympics, which for us presents an extraordinary opportunity for the continued growth of basketball in Europe and in the UK.

"We consider the UK to be an important market in the NBA's global development. By bringing these two exciting teams to London we are fulfilling our commitment to schedule a regular-season game in the UK prior to the 2012 Olympics ? a natural progression given the overwhelming response to the many [exhibition matches] we have played to sold-out crowds over the years."

Stern also claimed that basketball could yet grow markedly in popularity here. "I think that there's a good possibility that basketball will assume a role that folks in the United Kingdom might never have anticipated. With the Raptors and the Nets [they] are going to have players who might possibly, not certainly, be playing for France, Italy, Spain, Brazil and Lithuania. This is going to demonstrate to us ? based upon the rosters of these two teams as they may even be modified further going into these [Olympic] Games ? the global representation in the sport."

Stern was less clear about whether competitive matches would be played annually in the capital. "Right now I'm not looking much further than March."

Brandon Lloyd offers a very professional f-bomb to ex-teams

If you've already put together a list of your favorite inappropriate quotes of 2010, I'm sorry, but you're going to have to make room at the top. Broncos wide receiver Brandon Lloyd has chimed in with a late entry.

Speaking to the media on a conference call, Lloyd was asked if he'd like to say "I told you so" to the 49ers, Redskins, and Bears, his three former teams.

His answer? No, of course not! Because saying "I told you so" would mean that Lloyd is living in the past; that he's petty and vindictive. He's not like that at all! Unless, of course, he said something else ...

"No, I want to say, '[expletive] you.' And I mean that in the most professional way."

Oh, OK then. As long as it's professional.

Here's more from Mike Klis of the Denver Post.

After about 3 seconds of stunned silence, Broncos media relations director Patrick Smyth jumped into the call: “Anything else for Brandon, guys? I have receivers coach Adam Gase here … ”

I'm going to guess that the assembled media members preferred talking to the Pro Bowl receiver who won't filter out his f-bombs than receivers coach Adam Gase. Sorry, coach Gase.

In sports history, this is example 9,823,372 we've seen of an athlete taking any little slight he can find and turning it into motivation. It's what athletes do. Most of them don't turn into Andrew Dice Clay on a media conference call -- and Lloyd shouldn't have done that, either -- but it's not surprising he feels that way.

Whoever ends up as the next coach of the Broncos should wash Lloyd's mouth out with soap, though.

Andy Gray, Richard Keys Taken Off Air for Sexist Comments

LONDON (AP) -- Two of Britain's leading soccer commentators were reprimanded by their TV network and taken off the air Monday after making sexist remarks about two female game officials and a team executive.

Andy Gray and Richard Keys were disciplined Monday for derogatory comments about Sian Massey's suitability as a lineswoman for a Premier League game the commentators were working Saturday for Sky Sports.

Gray and Keys have been respected voices in soccer for the past 20 years. They also criticized the ability of former Premier League official Wendy Toms and a column written by West Ham executive Karren Brady in the Sun newspaper that day.

The men have privately apologized to their employer. Sky said the two have been warned and "reminded of their responsibilities." They will not work the show Monday night when Bolton hosts Chelsea in the Premier League.

"They (the comments) are inexcusable from anyone at Sky, regardless of their role or seniority," said Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports.

Louisville Upends UConn in Double-OT

STORRS, Conn. -- Rick Pitino has been with his Louisville basketball team every step of the way this season, but you get the impression he is having a hard time comprehending the comeback ability of the Cardinals. He did everything but rub his eyes in disbelief Saturday after Louisville rallied from a nine-point, second-half deficit to upset No. 5 Connecticut, 79-78, in double overtime at Gampel Pavilion.

It really was something to see. And it's safe to say Kemba Walker, a candidate for national player of the year, and the rest of the Huskies wish they had never witnessed it.

"It was a gutty performance," Pitino said. "I can't say enough about our guys. I thought I saw it all with Marquette, saw it all with the last game (against West Virginia). But this game, to me, is the capper of the season for us right now."

Against Marquette on Jan. 15, Louisville rallied from an 18-point deficit with 5:44 remaining to win, 71-70. Three days ago, the Cardinals trailed West Virginia by 12 in the second half and won 55-54 on Peyton Siva's driving scoop shot off the glass with 4.5 seconds remaining.

Now, No. 23 Louisville (17-4, 6-2) has moved into sole possession of second place in the Big East. And Siva, a 5-foot-11 sophomore guard, was in the middle of everything again -- especially the UConn defense, which couldn't stop him from getting to the rim at the end of the game.

Siva led Louisville with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. Those numbers are important, but the thing people will remember are the easy baskets he scored. Siva's layup with 29 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 59-59. His stunning and forceful dunk forced the second overtime. Then he got into the lane for two more driving layups in the second overtime.

The five least valuable players of Wild Card Weekend

Roman Harper, CB, New Orleans Saints.

I'd like to offer my compliments to whoever is responsible for stitching the Seahawks' names on the back of their jerseys. Roman Harper spent his entire Saturday inspecting your work, and offered nary a criticism.

The man who bit on play-action before turning around and watching John Carlson catch a wide-open touchdown pass in the first quarter? Roman Harper. The throw of the weekend, where Hasselbeck lifted a beautifully timed lob to Cameron Morrah down the sidelines for 39 yards? That was Harper biting on a hitch-and-go. Carlson's second touchdown, when he faked a blocking effort, went to the ground, got up and then caught a touchdown pass? Roman Harper was the man who was fooled. The safety who should have been deep on the long touchdown pass to Brandon Stokley? Roman Harper.

The Saints' other starting safety, Darren Sharper, was no prize, either. The Saints are going to have to find a way to get more speed in the back of the secondary before next season.

Matt Cassel, QB, Kansas City Chiefs.

Matt Cassel's strong suit this season was protecting the football. In 450 throws through the regular season, he was intercepted just seven times. Sunday, over 18 throws, he was intercepted three times. Had he thrown interceptions at that same rate over the regular season, he would have been intercepted 175 times this year.

Some of the throws he made Sunday, Brett Favre thought were irresponsible. He had a brutal day, which is kind of a shame, after he grew so much between Week 1 and Week 17. I'm curious to see how he'll do next season in someone else's offensive system.

Reggie Bush, RB, New Orleans Saints.

At this point, no one expects Reggie Bush to ever put a football team on his back and run, run, run them to victory. That's fine. But when your top two running backs, Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory (both undrafted, by the way) are out, is it not reasonable to expect the second overall pick from the 2006 draft to contribute something?

You can be mad at Julius Jones for fumbling and failing to convert third and fourth downs if you want to, but why should the Saints have to lean on Julius Jones to begin with? Why are we handing the ball to DeShawn Wynn to convert a crucial two-point conversion?

Exactly what does Reggie Bush do in New Orleans?

David Akers, K, Philadelphia Eagles.

It wasn't a great day for David Akers, as the usually rock-solid kicker missed a couple of field goals that he'd normally bury. Some kind of unknown off-the-field issue is bothering him, but, to his credit, he won't use it as an excuse. No one would even know about it if teammate Quintin Mikell wasn't talking about it after the game.

•  Jim Caldwell, Head Coach, Indianapolis Colts

I like to give coaches the benefit of the doubt, and in general, I think there are too many people out there who believe they are clock management savants and would play it flawlessly on NFL sidelines. That said, that last Jim Caldwell timeout has me completely befuddled.

His explanation -- that he wanted the Jets to have another play in the hopes that they'd take a sack or turn the ball over -- doesn't help me much. Essentially, he was gambling that the Jets were the dumbest team of all time. The decision he made was basically that he liked the chances of the Jets turning the ball over better than the chances of Nick Folk missing a 50-yarder.

The percentages disagreed. Vehemently.

'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena' Prequel Season, Episode 2 Recap

['Spartacus' - 'Missio']

After receiving the beatdown of a lifetime last week, courtesy of his new rival Tullius, what would Batiatus' next move be? How could he possibly rebound from that setback?

With some typical Batiatus deviousness, of course. That's the good news. But not all of 'Missio' worked. Though Batiatus' clever plan to ensnare Titus had its merits, and though it was a pleasure to see him get some revenge on the sneering Tullius and Vettius, other aspects of the episode didn't didn't have the impact of Operation Titus.

US Ties Chile, 1-1, as Young Strikers Juan Agudelo and Teal Bunbury Impress

usa chile u.s. national team soccerFor the second time in two national team appearances, teen sensation Juan Agudelo entered as a substitute and made the difference for the Americans.

Two months ago in South Africa, his 85th-minute goal was the difference in 1-0 win over the hosts. On Saturday night in Southern California, the 18-year-old drew the penalty kick that lifted the U.S. to a 1-1 tie with Chile.

Fellow reserve Teal Bunbury confidently converted the penalty in the 74th minute (video below), but it was Agudelo's enterprising and incisive run through the heart of the Chilean defense that was the highlight.

The play started with a long low pass from central defender Tim Ream, and Agudelo, who had entered the game along with Bunbury just 15 minutes earlier, unhinged the opposition with a give-and-go with midfielder Alejandro Bedoya. Dribbling into the penalty area at speed, Agudelo was upended by Chile's Sebastián Toro.
