Boston Celtics Rumor Mill: What's Obvious and What's Not

If websites are going to create ideas out of whole cloth, they had better base it on recognizable patterns already in place for the Celtics.

Pie in the sky is a concept better suited to Big Baby Glen Davis.

When it comes to the Boston Celtics, we know what the plan is based on past history. Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers are not exactly shoot-from-the-hip wide-eyed country bumpkins.

You can discount anything out of the realm of logic. That does not mean that Ainge won’t pull the trigger if something strikes him as a steal. We can likely say that his manner today is a bit more gun-shy after the raft of criticism he received over his mid-season deals in January.

Though Danny discounts the notion those moves were failures, he will be more tentative when it comes to being rash. The man who shot three-pointers while Larry Bird watched is hardly going to become a wall-flower.

We can say too with certainty that the return of Doc Rivers is a calculated and orchestrated move: Ainge knows that Rivers quells the veterans and has a magnetic power when it comes to bringing other players to Boston. He can talk free agents into a low-cost deal.

What that indicates is Ainge does not want to rock the Celtics boat. The Titanic sank with less stress.

If Paul Pierce wants to start, he will start. If Ray Allen wants to play with a second unit, he will. If Kevin Garnett wants to be a statesman, he will play that game. If Glen Davis thinks he is worth more elsewhere, so long, Baby.

Ainge loves Jeff Green and may not be as infatuated with the mercurial Rajon Rondo. If a deal is out there to trade disgruntled loners, then Ainge will fire away. He will want value for value.  Rondo is not part of a fire sale.

What worked before must work again. When Garnett, Pierce and Allen call up some free agent and tell him that he is wanted, count on Doc to cement the deal.

Kris Humphries and Dwight Howard are desirable, but like the former Celtic named Rick Fox, they have their eyes on a movie career in Hollywood. They may see themselves in the mode of Shaq with Kobe, rather than Shaq with KG.

Disgruntled and dishonored players may be the reclamation project Boston will seek. Give us your despised Lakers. Hand over the unwanted health risks. Greg Oden, we hear your name echoed around the trainer’s room. Andrew Bynum, where are you?

Age before beauty has been Ainge’s motto. Look for more stars from Sunset Boulevard, wanting for one more playoff close-up before their name on the marquee goes dark.

The draft possibilities for the Celtics are not germane, but the team may act as an intermediary for other teams. Rebuilding is not yet on the front burner, as indicated by a meeting recently of Doc Rivers with his old threesome, readying themselves for another run.

All bets are off if the season starts to look like a TV series called Lost. You can count on adjustments to this analysis after draft day, but don’t hold your breath for any surprises.
