Dez Bryant: Why 2011 Is a Crossroads in the Young Dallas Cowboy's Career

If we were to write a bio on the first year of Dez Bryant’s National Football League career, is it safe to say that the words controversial and explosive would be used as metaphors?

Controversial in terms of his off the field behavior and explosive when he touches the ball, right?

Dazzling Dez Bryant finds a way to stay in the news, whether it's for better or for worse. The last time we heard Mr. Bryant’s name was when he failed to show up for a team organized workout. Before that, it was for an unpaid jewelry bill and before that, it was for a mall incident.

Not to be Debbie Downer or anything, but does anything positive happen to this cat?

My man had bad press coming out of college and it has followed him into his pro career. Is that no fault of his own due to his image, or does he attract it himself? Is Dez just a magnet for trouble, or does the press just have it out for him?

Either way, Bryant needs to figure out a way to turn the negative attention into a positive.

The 2011 season may be a coming of age sort of year for the young talent. Bryant had an up and down rookie season riddled by injuries and controversy. He was injured in training camp and ended the year with a fractured ankle, only playing 12 games in between injuries.

There was the Thanksgiving blow-up on the sideline when the ‘Boys played the Saints and Bryant lost his cool. Coaches and players chalked Bryant’s sideline explosion up to just passion and a will to win.

Fans and pundits thought that it was Dez just being immature.

So which one is it? Is Dez just juvenile or is he passionate?

I believe it’s a little of both. Here we have a young man who is being thrust into the bright Cowboys lights and he’s having a hard time adjusting. Everything, and I mean everything, that he does will become headline news.

If Dez goes to a shopping mall and his friends get into trouble, it’s going to be in the news. Bryant may forget his drivers license at home one day and he’s pulled over on his way to practice. Honest mistake, right? Well, that’s now how the story will be portrayed.

Dez has to learn how to navigate—and that’s in all facets of his life. He has to learn how to navigate on the field and how he needs to portray himself when he’s away from the playing field.

If these minor problems continue to pop up for the talented receiver, then team owner Jerry Jones may not have as much patience as he’s shown in the past with previous players.

Bryant may have the yards, catches and touchdowns to prove himself viable in Cowboy town, but how long will Jerry and the team put up with the problems—or potential problems—that come with the former Oklahoma State receiver?

If this continues in 2011, dazzling Dez may become a thing of the past.
