For a moment, it looked like the Detroit Lions, the NFL's lowliest franchise of the past half-century, would pull a Thanksgiving day upset over the mighty New England Patriots and earn the team's biggest win in years.
For a moment.
Detroit was up 24-17 late in the third quarter of its annual holiday game and was on the verge of making a huge third-down stop of Tom Brady and the Patriots. New England had been making a run, but it felt like if the Lions could make a stop, the tide of momentum would have halted and Detroit would have a chance to pull the upset.
Then this happened:
Tom Brady to Deion Branch, just like in the old days. The pass tied the game and the Pats would go on to score the next 21 points to ease to a 45-24 win.
Branch had an assist from Lions cornerback Alphonso Smith, who was burned on the route, whiffed on a tackle and twisted and turned more than a rotisserie turkey. It wasn't the easiest day for Smith, who spent most of Thanksgiving lying on the turf in Detroit watching Patriots run past him.
Earlier in the season, the second-year veteran celebrated a touchdown by doing the Carlton Dance from "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." On Thursday, he played like cornerback like Carlton too.
