Staples Center Tragedy Hits Close to Home for Trevor Ariza

LOS ANGELES -- Trevor Ariza was disappointed just like the rest of the New Orleans Hornets on Monday night.

Their near-perfection came to an end with a 99-95 loss to the lowly Clippers, and no one in teal and yellow not named Emeka Okafor had more cause for angst than the seven-year veteran who struggled mightily. Two crucial missed free throws and a missed 3-pointer were in the last 21 seconds alone, and his final tally -- nine points on 4-of-11 shooting in 37 minutes -- was enough to leave Ariza shaking his head at his locker afterward as the Hornets fell to 11-2 and the Clippers improved to 2-13.

But if ever there was day to keep things in perspective, this was it. Just one night before in this building, two-year-old Lucas Anthony Tang fell approximately 30 feet from a luxury suite and was pronounced dead a day later. His family had been celebrating a Lakers win over Golden State, with pictures of the celebration being taken while little Lucas' life was cut painfully short when he stumbled over a short glass barrier to the plastic seats below.
