Glanville signs with UFL, Schottenheimer may soon follow

As the United Football League waits for its chance to capitalize on the NFL lockout, it's stocking up on coaching star power.

Jerry Glanville has been officially tabbed to be the head coach and general manager of the Hartford Colonials, and according to Chris Mortensen, Marty Schottenheimer is on the verge of being named the head coach of the Virginia Destroyers.

Can Marty and Jerry help the fledgling football league? It's likely not a game-changer for television ratings -- I don't think anyone has ever tuned in to see Jerry Glanville or Marty Schottenheimer coach -- but it grabs some headlines, and on some level, it probably does help to add credibility.

Not necessarily among casual fans, but for players out there who are wondering if the UFL is a legitimate option for them in the event of a lockout, it might help to see guys like Schottenheimer and Glanville on board. Well, Schottenheimer, anyway.

The Glanville hiring has more of a sideshow feel to it. When you think about Jerry Glanville's coaching career, what do you think of? Brilliant tactical decisions and a record of unparalleled success? Or the goofball who left tickets at will call for Elvis and encouraged his players to get in a cheap shot or two after the whistle?

He certainly wasn't hired because of his recent coaching brilliance. His last gig was as head coach at Portland State, and he resigned with a record of 9-24. Best of luck, Hartford!

Schottenheimer's reputation, by contrast, is that of a football purist who has always put fundamentals and teaching the game ahead of anything else. If you're a young player who ends up on the roster of the Virginia Destroyers, you can count on being coached by a guy who wants to make you a better player.

If you end up in Hartford, you can count on being coached by a guy with a terrific belt buckle collection.

Browns cornerback received death threats from Browns fans

You might have noticed that the Cleveland Browns had a few lapses in the secondary last year. You also might have noticed that cornerback Eric Wright was involved in a few of them.

And if you're a Browns fan and you noticed these things, you might have threatened to murder Eric Wright.

From Mary Kay Cabot at the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

"I went from people expecting me to be a top cornerback in the league to receiving death threats," Wright said. "It was a lot to deal with."

[...]

Wright never reported the death threats to the Browns or police, attributing them to the extreme passion of Browns fans.

"I wasn't fearing for my life," he said. "As serious as a death threat may be, I wasn't going to let a few bad apples ruin the whole tree."

Weird. It's almost like the people of Cleveland are bitter and frustrated with their local sports teams. Hm.

Give Wright credit, though. He says he still wants to be in Cleveland, and after having a productive sit-down with team president Mike Holmgren, is determined to make himself a better player in 2011.

I'm not sure it's the right attitude to just ignore a death threat -- you really can't be too careful with something like that -- but his attitude towards football is right where it should be. He's played some quality ball before. I'm sure he will again.

Under Armour helps protect Cam Newton from a potential lockout

Should this ridiculous lockout come to fruition, there's at least one NFL rookie who won't have to worry about putting food on the table.

Under Armour has signed former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton to an endorsement contract, one that Darren Rovell of CNBC reports is "the largest deal ever given to an incoming NFL rookie." Specific terms aren't available, but the biggest deal prior to this one was given to Reggie Bush in 2006 and paid him over $1 million per year.

Say what you want about Cam Newton, but no one can ever question his ability to generate income before he actually plays football.

If it feels like you've seen an Under Armour logo on Newton before, it's because you have. Lots and lots of times. Quoth Rovell:

The signing provides great consistency to Under Armour. Thanks to its deal with Auburn, and the school's national championship this season, Newton arguably became the most identifiable athlete of the brand in the company's 15-year history. He typically wore 17 Under Armour logos each Saturday during the season.

Holy thunder. Seventeen Under Armour logos on his person, all at the same time? I'm not even sure how you do that. Does Under Armour make ascots and dickies that can be worn superfluously under a football uniform? Did he have Under Armour fillings?

It might be a bit of a gamble for the company, as Newton, in most mock drafts at the moment, isn't a top-10 pick or even the top quarterback prospect. But at the same time, not many of the top prospects in this year's draft class play at the marketable skill positions, and Newton, if nothing else, is going to be highly visible.

The draft is set for April 28.

UFC: Ricardo Almeida Announces His Retirement from MMA

After an 11-year career that has spread from Pancrase to Pride to, most recently, the UFC, the "Big Dog" has called it a career.

Under his coach and mentor, Renzo Gracie, Almeida amassed a 6-5 record with the UFC.

Almeida has previously taken a four-year break from fighting where he focused on teaching and running his jiu jitsu academy in New Jersey.  However, this time things seem different.

After his 18-fight mixed martial arts career, he is truly ready to call it quits.

Here's what he had to say about his decision to retire (via NewJerseyJiuJitsu.com)

"Back in 2008 I decided to return to MMA. Since then I have had the privilege of fighting eight times in the UFC. As a competitor I can think of no bigger thrill than to stand in the center of the octagon with my hands raised.

During these almost four years it has been a personal struggle to find balance between my fighting career, caring for my son who was diagnosed with autism soon after I signed a six-fight deal with the UFC, teaching at my growing Jiu Jitsu Academy and the family duties we all have.

MMA is a great sport but also physically and mentally unforgiving. It is a dangerous task to step in the octagon, specially if your focus is not at 100 percent.

After much deliberation since my fight at UFC 128 I have decided to step away from the sport as a fighter.

I will continue to fully support the UFC as a coach and of course as a big fan. I would like to thank Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White for their leadership and vision which brought the sport to new heights. I would also like to thank Joe Silva for giving me the opportunity to compete among the best martial artists in the world.

Renzo Gracie, Mark Henry, Frankie Edgar and all my teammates who I could not have gone through this challenge without.

Finally I would like to thank my wife, children and family as well as my students. You will have my integral dedication from here on.

Lastly the fans who make MMA the greatest sport there is.

Ricardo Almeida."

As Almeida is gone from competition, his grappling and fighting skills will live on for years to come, through his students.

Fran Tarkenton could fix the labor mess in two minutes

Yes, it appears to be true. Fran Tarkenton, former quarterback with the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants, a true Hallof Famer on the field but sometimes less so in the business world, believes that if he was in charge of the mediation sessions between the NFL owners and players, he'd have all the issues sorted out in two minutes.

No, really. That's what Tarkenton recently told Dino Costa of SIRIUS Mad Dog Radio.

I'm really emotional about this. With everything going on in the world, we've got the tragedy in Japan and what's happening in all the Middle East when all these people want freedom, and it's a wonderful thing. And here we have the most successful sports franchise in the world, the National Football League. We don't want to give this up. And we understand in professional football, teams win, individuals don't. And it's time for these owners and time for these players to sit down together, get the lawyers out of the [room], lawyers don't help things. Lawyers muck up things. Lawyers cause problems, lawyers in divorce suits. They don't help the people get back together. And we need to get real people, get the lawyers out of the negotiating room, stop the lawsuits, and let's get real people, owners and players, who are partners in all this, let's let them get together and get this thing solved now rather than later.

I don't take the owners' side. I don't take the players' side. I take the fans' side. This is not a typical labor situation. The players are not impoverished. The players are making the most money of any generation ever. They're the greatest players we've ever had. Every generation has gotten better and this generation has gotten better. The owners, certainly, these are billionaire owners. And they've got great egos. There's a big pot of money here. There's plenty of money here. Everybody is doing well. Let's don't jeopardize what we have. Let's think of how we can get this together. They're not that far apart.

While Tarkenton shares his views with many Americans, things aren't quite that simple. Yes, there are far more important things going on in the world, and yes, the NFL is a ridiculously profitable entity, and yes, it's always funny to make lawyer jokes, and yes, NFL lead counsel Jeff Pash writes his own unintentional jokes at times with his … "interesting" relationship with the truth. But when it comes down to what is affecting the two sides and their ability to work it out, getting the lawyers and mediators in the room was the only way owners like Jerry Richardson didn't start acting out and treating players on a radically condescending fashion. And how is Tarkenton going to resolve the fact that the owners want the players to take an 18 percent pay cut across the board without audited, line-by-line financials per team? Just tell both sides to "respect the fans and get it done"?

Gosh, why didn't anyone else think of that? All these complicated issues out there, all these other ramifications to deal with, and all someone had to do all along was to tell the owners and the players to respect the fans? Well, that's a relief. OK, Fran ? you get everyone in that room, and tell these two sides in heavy conflict over billions of dollars and life-altering health issues, that goshdarnit, they just need to work it out.

And watch them laugh you right out of the room. And justifiably so.

Tarkenton has been known to spout off on a number of current NFL issues ? his takeoffs on Brett Favre and other quarterbacks are generally funny (if a little overblown), but he is so far out of his depth here, it's hard to know where to begin. Before he starts popping off with overly easy answers that anyone could have come up with (unsuccessfully, to be sure), he should study up a bit on the actual issues affecting both sides so that he can come up with a series of reasoned options that actually work.

And then, maybe his words will be worth our time.

Jonathan Groff Returning to 'Glee' for Three Episodes

Jonathan GroffDarren Criss better watch his back -- 'Glee''s original curly-haired heartthrob guest star, Jonathan Groff, is heading back to the hit show for three episodes this season.

Although it was previously reported that Groff's schedule might not allow time for him to return before the end of season 2, according to TV Line, Lea Michele's real-life BFF just closed a deal to appear in the final three episodes of the season.

Groff's Jesse St. James didn't leave on a good note at the end of last season -- Rachel found out he only wooed her as part of an evil plot from the Vocal Adrenaline director (who happened to be the New Directions diva's birth mother). As all televised seduction plots go, though, St. James' feelings for Rachel turned out to be real.

Olympic 'gift' could make British hoop dreams a reality | London 2012

Basketball set to enjoy post-Games boom time if GB teams can secure wildcard entry to London 2012 from Fiba

After more than two decades of slow burn, the National Basketball Association believe next year's London Olympics could light the blue touchpaper for the sport in Britain. There are many, from an organising committee flogging tickets to a government hoping to boost participation ? not to mention the international and domestic federations in charge of the sport ? who hope they are right.

As their impeccably marketed circus rolled into London on Friday for the first regular-season NBA games to be played in Europe, two back-to-back ties between the Toronto Raptors and the New Jersey Nets at the O2 Arena, the organisation's deputy commissioner and chief operating officer insisted next summer's Games would have a huge impact. "It's not going to happen overnight. But the Olympics could ignite much broader interest in the game. For people here to see the best in the world play in Olympic competition will, I think, be a life-changing event," says Adam Silver.

It is easy to become inured to grand pronouncements about global growth, and there are already more than enough legacy hopes pinned on next summer's Olympics, but the NBA and the International Basketball Federation (Fiba) are convinced the Games will be a pivotal moment. The basketball arena on the Olympic Park is a temporary structure, but British Basketball harbour ambitions of moving into the Handball Arena and making it a permanent home for the sport in east London. Beyond 2012, there are embryonic plans to bid for the EuroBasket tournament in 2015 or 2017.

Ever since London won the right to host the Games, basketball has been flagged up as the sort of sport that will drive a virtuous circle of increased participation and better elite performance. It requires comparatively little space or equipment, is suited to urban areas and is popular with both sexes. But harnessing its potential has proved more difficult, with the past two decades littered with attempts to establish a competitive national league and boost performance on the European and world stage. The latest push could yet be derailed by Fiba, who will meet in Lyon a week today to decide whether to gift Team GB one of 12 places at the Games.

Basketball is unusual in that the host nation is not guaranteed a place but depends on the federation awarding it a wildcard. Fiba's general secretary, Patrick Baumann, accepts the British teams deserve to be gifted a place in "sporting terms" despite the fact neither would qualify by merit. But there are wider concerns and Fiba need to be convinced over legacy plans beyond the Games.

"We will be looking at the performance of the team on court. The main objective is to be competitive," Baumann says. "The second aspect is what is going to happen after the Games, how the associations' efforts will be continued. Will the British team exist after the Games? Will it be resurrected only for 2016? How will this country become a basketball country?"

On Friday, in a match that seemed to make more impression on the sold-out crowd as an experience than a sport, the Nets defeated the Raptors 116-103. Last night the Nets needed three overtimes before winning 137-136 to complete the double. Eleven NBA teams have played nine matches in the UK and Silver insists these games were part of an "evolution" designed to see a "European division" established. While acknowledging there are logistical and commercial hurdles to overcome, he foresees a handful of European teams playing in state of the art arenas within a decade.

"One of the things that held the league back until recently is you didn't have these American-style arenas and visions that, economically, can allow you now to make sense out of games like this," says Tim Leiweke, chief executive of AEG, the US sports giant that operates the O2 and has a share in the Los Angeles Lakers. "We have an economic model that can work for the league, but we need six or eight of these in the right markets."

It is easy to believe a combination of US commercial nous and the Olympic spirit could provide a defining moment for British basketball. Whether that feeling persists once the glitter cannons have been put away, the NBA teams have gone home and the hard slog in building the profile of the game resumes may depend on the decision reached in Lyon.

The NFL makes sure you’ll never have to see something like this

Along with officially moving the kickoff spot from the 30- to the 35-yard line, the NFL also passed a measure Tuesday that will forever prohibit any team from having a field a color other than green. College football will have to remain the home of oddlycolored fields.

Sadly or quite fortunately, depending on your point of view, something like this can never become reality:

The Shutdown Corner Interview: Boise State WR Titus Young, Pt. 1

With the ascent of DeSean Jackson of the Philadelphia Eagles, and with more multi-receiver sets becoming a play-to-play part of the NFL, more and more teams are looking for a smaller speed receiver to function more as a primary weapon as opposed to an ancillary threat. It's possible that no receiver in the 2011 NFL draft class is better set to benefit from his new focus than Boise State's Titus Young.

Averaging over 15 yards per reception throughout his career with the Broncos, Young finished his 44-game stretch at Boise State with 198 receptions for 2,999 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also gained 1,435 yards and scored two touchdowns on 55 kick returns, 76 yards on 11 punt returns, and 341 yards and eight touchdowns on 42 carries.

We were recently able to talk with Titus about everything from his new deal with adidas, to the pre-draft evaluation process, to the things that make Boise State's offense different. This is part one of the interview; part two will be up shortly.

Shutdown Corner: Let's talk about the adiZero cleat ? I was talking to Eric Berry about this, and he said that the lightness of the cleat, and the way it made him feel faster, actually gave him more confidence on the field. Do you find that to be the case?

Titus Young: It's definitely a cleat that feels like it's not even on your feet. It's like putting on some socks. They're very light ? 6.9 ounces ? and I believe they're the lightest cleats out there, unless you tell me otherwise. It's great especially for a skill position player, but even if you're a lineman, just having those cleats on makes you feel a bit more agile. It's definitely an advantage.

SC: We talked a bit at the Senior Bowl, and it seemed that you had a really good week there ? what was that experience like for you?

TY: It was a great experience ? I got to meet a lot of the guys that I looked up to through my years in college, like Jake Locker, , players like that. It was definitely a blast, and I really enjoyed everything about it.

SC: Going from the Senior Bowl to the combine, everyone has little things they want to work on. What did you take away from the Senior Bowl that you wanted to specifically get sharpened up for your combine workout?

TY: I've really just been working on the details of my game, and that's just everything. But areas that I've been trying to press are pretty much putting on a couple more pounds of muscle, and I feel I've been doing a pretty good job in that. I'm about 180 right now coming into my pro day. Maybe I'll eat a couple more peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (laughs).

SC: What's your height?

TY: 5-foot-11 ; nobody ever wants to give me six feet!

SC: How did you feel you did at the combine?

TY: I felt that I did my best, and that's all you can ask for.

SC: The obvious player comparison to you ? and I know you've been asked about this a lot ? is DeSean Jackson. How does it feel to be compared to an elite receiver like that? Do you feel it's an accurate comparison, and do you think your game is different in any way?

TY: I definitely feel that it's a good comparison, and it's great to be compared to a player who's done so much in the NFL in his first couple of years; it's very humbling. But I feel that we do have some of the same exciting qualities ? the quickness and speed and elusiveness in and out of our breaks. Making the first guy miss, and I know a lot of teams like a guy like that. I feel I'm very good a those things, being blessed with the abilities I have.

SC: Talk a bit about the Boise State offense ? I've been watching it for years, even before you got there, and there seems to be a bit of everything in there. What's the philosophy of the offense, and what does the coaching staff bring to that? How pro-style is it, and are there spread elements as well?

TY: I feel that one thing we definitely specialize in is getting those personnel packages out there. We have a lot of plays where players maybe get a chance to come in for two or three plays in a game, but it gives a lot of guys opportunities to make plays. We have a little bit of pro-style, a little bit of spread ? I think we take a bit from everybody. The caches did a really good job getting us on and out of those different personnel packages. It's fun, because you'll have different packages named after you. Like "Bronco Young" tells me to go to the backfield and act as a running back. Or in "Bronco One," I'll be a wide receiver. It's just exciting when the coaches put different players in position to make plays in the offense.

SC: So, it's kind of like the old Gruden verbiage, where they'd have sets called "U Keyshawn (Johnson)" or "U (Keenan) McCardell" or "U (Joe)Jurevicius."

TY: Yeah, something like that.

DeAngelo Williams is handed a ticket out of Carolina

According to Adam Schefter, the Carolina Panthers have decided not to use their franchise tag on stud running back DeAngelo Williams. Thus, unless they can work out a long-term deal with him, he'll be free to explore unrestricted free agency.

Maybe I'm wrong -- and there's been no indication from Williams that he does or doesn't want to stay -- but given that the Panthers just went 2-14, and Williams has always been locked in a time-split situation with Jonathan Stewart, I'm guessing he's done as a Panther.

"Yes, I would love to be a Carolina Panther" is just not something you hear a ton of these days.

And truthfully, even though they're short on talent, letting Williams walk is probably the right call for Carolina. As good as he is, with two 1,000-yard seasons under his belt, he was hobbled with injuries last year, and his yards-per-carry was down significantly. In his absence, Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson performed adequately.

As Schefter says, the move allows the Panthers to lock up either center Ryan Kalil or quarterback-killer Charles Johnson. It's easier to replace a running back than it is to replace either of those gentlemen.

So, it's good news for DeAngelo Williams, and good news for teams that need a running back. Williams should be available, and at the age of 27 (and with limited wear because of the time-sharing), he might have some prime years left.

The NFLPA’s dumb plan to keep prospects from attending the draft

The NFLPA's latest attempt to gain leverage in its ongoing struggle with the league is to keep the top college prospects from actually attending the draft.

You hear that, Roger Goodell? You're not allowed to give anyone a hat!

I don't know if the NFL feels terribly threatened by this, but it shouldn't. I can only speak for myself, but I'm not going to miss Stuart Scott trying to find 25 different variations of the question, "What's it like to have your dream come true?"

Maybe the prospects in attendance give us a nice moment here or there, or maybe we miss out on the shameful schaudenfreude of seeing a top-five prospect free-fall into the 20s. Myself, I won't miss it that much. Instead of the forced, predictable, highly coached interview, we'll instead skip right to Kiper, McShay and Mayock breaking down film of the prospect.

I'm fine with that. Those guys are the real stars of draft day, anyway.

The people who really get the shaft in this plan are the young players themselves. They're the ones being deprived of a moment in the sun. I'd imagine that a lot of young fellows dream of that moment when their name is called and they take the stage. It's not like they'll be able to go back in time and recapture that after the fact.

Way to put the screws to them, NFLPA! That'll teach them to -- wait, what's that? The people you're punishing are the people you're supposed to be representing? Oh. Um ... well, I'm sure you have your reasons.

And if there's a second group that's also stuck with the shaft, it's fans, who do enjoy seeing the rookies in attendance.

So, to sum up, what the NFLPA has concocted here is a plan that doesn't threaten the NFL much at all, but will crush the dreams of some of the people they represent, and might also make a once-glorious offseason football oasis less entertaining for a percentage of NFL fans. This is helpful, how, exactly?

This is why I hate everyone involved.

Lockout could prevent Packers from getting their Super Bowl rings

In a labor battle where each side seems determined to prove that it can be smaller and more ridiculous than the other on a regular basis, the simple act of a team receiving its Super Bowl rings has now been thrown into limbo.

Bill Pennington of the New York Times reports that as long as the current lockout is in place, players and owners are prohibited from contacting each other. Therefore, the Packers' management can't consult with the players on the design of the rings the team won the right to wear when it beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-25, in Super Bowl XLV. And since the two sides can't talk, there's apparently no way for both sides to wind up at the White House long enough to meet President Obama (who might be too busy dealing with his bracket to talk to them in the first place ? and who may try to get involved in the labor fight, to the presumed dismay of both sides). Teams usually receive their rings in June ceremonies, but the design obviously takes time.

To put it bluntly, the restrictions on the ring design and ring ceremony are ridiculous, punitive, and completely transparent on the NFL's part. Just a few days after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell bypassed the NFLPA completely and sent a form letter to every active NFL player, and as the ownership side keeps insisting that the NFLPA is more interested in litigation than mediation, we have these mysterious bans on rewards for the players on an all-of-a-sudden basis.

It's bad enough that players are locked out of team medical facilities at the same time the NFL has said that any violations of the NFL's currently nonexistent conduct policy will be dealt with when the work stoppage is over. But for the NFL to say that one rep can't get together on each side to at least agree on a design for Super Bowl rings smacks of the kind of "nyah, nyah, nyah" tactics these guys should have outgrown in second or third grade.

After all, the Packers'organization currently benefits from sales of Super Bowl merchandise and highlights DVDs; perhaps since we're establishing a rule that neither side should gain from that game at this time, there should be a hold on the team's receipt of any merchandising revenue having to with the purchase of Super Bowl swag until this is all over?

In the end, this is totally unnecessary, and at a time when both sides are saying that they're open to anything that would break the logjam and get talks starting again, a simple and appropriate ceremony in which the players from the best team in football get what they'redue after the greatest game of their lives would be a great start. Until then, this is the kind of thing that has the NFL living up to every negative perception in the book.

Randy Moss loves the Patriots, perhaps to an unhealthy degree

When players speak glowingly of an organization, most of the time, they actually play for that organization. Or, at the very least, weren't just traded by that organization. But Randy Moss is not most players.

Via Tim Graham at ESPN, Randy Moss, speaking to KFAN in Minneapolis, went Simple Jack on everyone and talked about how the Patriots m-m-m-make him happy.

"If you're asking me where my heart and where I'm happy is, I love playing with Tom Brady. I love being coached by Bill Belichick."

"I think that just the success as a wide receiver and everything that the New England Patriots stand for, you know, I'm a big fan of Bill Belichick's," Moss said. "I really am, and not just on the field. I'm a fan of his off the field because, you know, the little grouchy man that you see on-camera is not what you see off-camera."

I see that as a tremendous compliment to Bill Belichick. Not necessarily because he loved Randy Moss so much -- maybe he did, maybe he didn't -- but because Moss felt loved, and Moss has always needed to feel that way by his coaches and teammates.

Different guys are motivated in different ways. Either Bill Belichick is a sweetheart to everyone (I'm skeptical) or Belichick identified how he could best motivate Randy Moss, and then did it. That's not to say that he didn't actually care for Randy Moss, but either way, it's a credit to Belichick that he was able to get the best out of Moss when so many other coaches had failed to.

As for Moss, he's a free agent for the theoretical 2011 season. He mentioned the Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks as places he would play, and stressed that he'll play for someone he feels will be loyal to him.

The Shutdown Corner Mock: ‘News You Can Use’ Edition, #17-32

After spending the better part of last week at Athletes Performance in L.A. with Travelle Gaines and the players he trains, I came away with some interesting insights as to the physical and mental states of certain draft prospects, as well as the specific interests of certain NFL teams. I found out that the hubbub about Da'Quan Bowers' knee seems rather overblown, and I saw running back Taiwan Jones set himself up to run perhaps the fastest 40-yard dashin the 2011 draft class. This version of the Shutdown Corner mock reflects the need-based mindset driven by the current lockout, and a few picks are dialed into team interests. Here's the back half of the first round; picks 1-16 can be found here.

17. New England Patriots (from Oakland Raiders) -- Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama

As great as Bill Belichick's Patriots teams have been over the last half-decade, the franchise hasn't actually won a Super Bowl since the 2004 season, when running back Corey Dillon put up perhaps the greatest single season in Pats history at the position. Belichick and his coaches have run different types of offenses in the last few years to compensate for the lack of an elite running game, but even the 2007 pseudo-spread offense that broke all those offensive records had no answer for the furious blitz of the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. Now that the Pats have gone back to the future with a more integrated approach, Ingram could be the missing piece with his ability to do it all and play every down. If Belichick reaches out to old buddy Nick Saban and asks for the Ingram scouting report, he'll hear nothing but praise. Maybe Ingram is the final piece that gets Belichick his fourth ring.

18. San Diego Chargers ? Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue

The Chargers had a surprisingly effective defense in 2010, but Shaun Phillips (who did put up 11 sacks on his own) could use some help on the edge as he did when Shawne Merriman was at his best. Kerrigan, who has been working on his weight (beefing up to 267 pounds for the combine) and getting more involved in linebacker drills to prove his ability to switch roles in different defenses and hybrid fronts. With a relentless sense for pass rush, an outstanding first step, and the right combination of intelligence and determination, Kerrigan is the kind of do-it-all player the Chargers will need going forward as they try to plug some of the holes created by A.J. Smith's recent unpredictable moves on various draft weekends.

19. New York Giants ? Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College

Nothing would make Tom Coughlin happier (if anything can make Coughlin happy) than to fill an obvious need on the offensive line with a guy from his old stomping grounds. Castonzo plays the way Coughlin likes his guys to go ? he's tough, relentless, technically sound, and he has room to get even better. The G-Men need help on their defensive line (specifically inside), but in the best D-line draft class we've ever seen, teams can wait to fill those needs in the later rounds.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers ? Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin

Many mocks have the Bucs taking another defensive lineman in the first round, but as one of the pleasant surprises of the 2010 season, the Bucs need to start regenerating things along the offensive line. They've got the franchise quarterback in Josh Freeman, but to protect Freeman, Tampa Bay will have to reconcile the free-agent statuses of right guard Davin Joseph and right tackle Jeremy Trueblood. Carimi can play either side, and he's a very fundamentally sound tackle. He'll need work blocking at the second level, but he'd be a great option for a rushing attack now led by the powerful LeGarrette Blount.

21. Kansas City Chiefs ? Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois

The Chiefs have swung and missed along their front line in recent years, but that puts all the more pressure on decision-makers Scott Pioli and Todd Haley to make the right choice as the Chiefs try to retain the momentum predicated on their surprising division win last season. Liuget could play three-tech in a four-man front when the Chiefs go that way, and he'd be especially effective lined up next to sackmaster Tamba Hali, leaving offensive lines vulnerable no matter who they double. When the Chiefs switch to a 5-2 front, Liuget can play the five-technique with aplomb. This pick doesn't solve the team's need at pure nose tackle, but that's not a position you want to overdraft.

22. Indianapolis Colts ? Tyron Smith, OT, USC

A key question Colts in 2011 will be how many of their 2010 shortcomings were related to a pretty horrific injury run, and how many were due to the inevitable need to fill holes for whatever reason. As much of a personnel genius as Bill Polian has been through the years, one thing that has to drive him nuts is his recent inability to find the protector of Peyton Manning's blind side. Natural guard Charlie Johnson has done an admirable job as a patchwork solution over the last couple of years, but it's time to solve the problem in the long term. Smith could start at right tackle, where he played at USC, and eventually move to the left side as his acumen matches his athleticism.

23. Philadelphia Eagles ? Brandon Harris, CB, Miami

When you give up 31 touchdown passes, the most in your franchise's history, it's safe to say that you'll be looking pretty hard at various secondary positions in the draft. The Eagles have Asante Samuel (or, as Phil Simms insists on calling him, "Samuels"), but little else of elite exchange in the last line of defense. Harris is a bit of a sleeper who could work very well in the Eagles' scheme ? he's a smooth-player with excellent man coverage skills, and like Samuel, he's not shy at all about jumping routes. He gets a bit lost in larger zone spaces, and he tends to bat balls away when he should be picking them off, but the points that need work are outweighed by Harris' overall potential.

24. New Orleans Saints ? Justin Houston, OLB, Georgia

The Saints had just 10.5 sacks from their defensive ends in 2010, and as often as Gregg Williams switched fronts, they're in the market for a guy who can rush the passer and play in multiple sets. Houston excelled in both 4-3 and 3-4 defenses at Georgia; he's one of the few elite pass rushers in this draft class with film showing him in both systems for a full season ? and his blast off the edge would be a welcome addition to Williams, who has never seen a blitz he didn't like.

25. Seattle Seahawks ? Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado

Needs at quarterback abound, as do holes in the offensive and defensive lines. But the Seahawks are looking hard at Smith, and for good reason. General manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll are looking at a division in which one team is just a hot receiver away from tearing it up with a great new quarterback (the Rams), and two teams with receivers in place, just needing the right kind of quarterback (the 49ers and Cardinals). Seattle's pass defense was burned far too often, especially when Marcus Trufant's back was hurt down the stretch. Smith can cover a lot of ground, and plays both man and zone very well.

26. Baltimore Ravens ? Torrey Smith, WR, Maryland

The Ravens have a quarterback in Joe Flacco with quite possibly the best arm in the game, but they have nobody to stretch defenses in the passing game. Smith is still a raw player ? his somewhat clumsy work around the cones at the scouting combine spoke to the fact that he needs some serious help with route concepts ? but he's a tough day in waiting for all but the quickest NFL cornerbacks, he's a dynamic returner, and he plays tougher than some speed receivers tend to. The routes will come in time, but you can't create speed out of a playbook. It's past time for the Ravens to get some.

27. Atlanta Falcons ? Martez Wilson, LB, Illinois

The Falcons have invested some pretty heavy draft stock in potential pass-rushers over the last few years, but Jamaal Anderson was an unmitigated bust, and Lawrence Sidbury is still finding his feet. With Wilson, the Falcons could actually solve two defensive problems under the right circumstances ? the need to get stronger in their pure linebacker corps (Wilson displayed great range in Illinois' frequent nickel sets) and the need for a real edge rusher to complement and eventually replace John Abraham. Like Karlos Dansby, Wilson is that rare linebacker with legitimate reverse and forward gears, and the Falcons would benefit greatly from that versatility.

28. New England Patriots ? Danny Watkins, OG, Baylor

The Pats need a full-time edge-rusher, but they also need a full-time replacement for elite guard Logan Mankins, whose relationship with the team's front office has been about as friendly as the one between David Stern and Mark Cuban. Watkins replaced Jason Smith as Baylor's left tackle, but he projects to guard at the next level. The former volunteer fireman from British Columbia would be a perfect fit in the Pats' offensive system especially as it goes more with a fast-break football look with multiple timing-based targets. Watkins is incredibly strong at the point, quick to the second level, he's very intelligent, and he can play new positions with very little ramp-up speed. Sound like a Belichick guy?

29. Chicago Bears -- Mike Pouncey, OG, Florida

When it comes to the Bears' offensive line, perhaps the one positive that no matter where Jerry Angelo drafts to fill a hole, the hole's already there. The fact that Chicago made it all the way to the NFC Championship game with the worst offensive line in football should be a pretty severe heads up. Pouncey, who may drop a bit if people remain uncertain about his ability to play center at the NFL level, projects very well as a power guard in the Ben Grubbs mold. And if the Bears want to turn Pouncey into their next franchise center over time, who better to mentor him than veteran Olin Kreutz?

30. New York Jets ? Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State

The Jets need a speed rusher, but they also need someone to man it up at nose tackle consistently now that Kris Jenkins is less of a factor (if he's a factor at all). Paea can't help with the speed-rushing stuff, but he can play just about every other position in Rex Ryan's multiple fronts. He can crash inside as a three-tech on a four-man front, blast inside double teams as a one-gap nose tackle, and he has the strength to learn how to be a true two-gap over center player in time.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers ? Nate Solder, OT, Colorado

Like the Bears, the Steelers have made multiple deep postseasons runs in the last few years despite offensive lines that have been indifferent at best. That works when your quarterback has an amazing sense of avoiding pressure (and making stick throws with defenders hanging all over him), but it's a risky game to play. Solder would be a good pick for a team needing to improve its offensive line, but that also accepts and adapts to the shortcomings of its linemen. At this point, Solder is a very athletic project player who's still learning the fine points of his position after previous years as a tight end and defensive end. He will get beaten in the short term by speed moves, and he needs some help with the back end of the pocket, but there are times when line coaches look more that what a player could be than what he currently is.

32. Green Bay Packers ? Rahim Moore, FS, UCLA

The Super Bowl champs got a bit of a wake-up call in that big game against the Steelers when Charles Woodson broke his collarbone, and that vaunted Green Bay pass defense started springing some leaks. Ted Thompson has set the secondary up with some great young talent (including lockdown corner Tramon Williams), but there's a hole at that hybrid corner/safety position that Woodson mans so very well that could eventually be filled by two players in this class ? Texas' Aaron Williams and UCLA's Rahim Moore. While Williams is a former corner who projects better as an NFL safety (think Malcolm Jenkins). Moore is a college safety whose skills may set him up very well to be a hybrid blitzing run-stopping nickel-back.

Video: Titans RB Stafon Johnson runs for the first time in months

CARSON, Calif. -- A quick 10-second sprint charge on a treadmill usually isn't a big deal; it (or something like it) is part of the training for any athlete looking to retain (or regain) his or her explosiveness. But occasionally, such things have a deeper meaning. Such was the case for Tennessee Titans running back Stafon Johnson, who was able to get back on the treadmill for the first time in months last week during his rehab and training at the Athletes Performance facility at the Home Depot Center under the supervision of trainer Travelle Gaines (standing to Johnson's left in the video).

Johnson suffered a broken fibula and severely dislocated ankle in the team's 2010 preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks. It was an interesting circumstance for Johnson, because the Seahawks were coached by Pete Carroll, who coached Johnson at USC. And when the injury happened, Carroll was on the field just as quickly as Titans coach Jeff Fisher.

Johnson had already come back from a serious injury, when he suffered a horrific bench press accident while working out at USC in September of 2009. A barbell with 225 pounds set on it fell and crushed Johnson's larynx, and doctors later told him that had his neck not been so well-developed, he might have died. But he came back from that injury, and he's coming back from the leg injury that robbed him of a rookie season in the NFL.

An undrafted free agent, Johnson wasgiven an injured/waived designationafterhisinjuries, and all signs point to his being able to compete for a spot in the Titans' runningback rotation in 2011. Just as impressive was the fact that Johnson took this enormousstep without the benefit of a team facility or team medical staff, as the current lockout has prevented players from being able to use those facilities and professionals on staff.

A few hours after that first run, I talked to Stafon about the long road back.

"I'm just doing whatever God's put in my way to do," Johnson told me. "Whatever he has for me. I pray that I can be an inspiration to others, to let them know that anything can happen. You've just got to keep your mind tuned. I can't let little things … get in the way of where I want to go. (I was blessed) to be able to talk again and breathe again, so why not go after what I want to go for?"

Why not, indeed,

Small Talk: Luol Deng

The Chicago Bulls and Great Britain forward on Cesc Fbregas's future and why he'd like to live in the film Avatar

Hi Luol how are you? Good. How you doin?

How confident are you feeling about this summer's Eurobasket qualifiers? I'm excited, we've got a young team, a very athletic team. We lack some experience but I'd say it will be fun.

Is there more pressure on you with Great Britain than when you're playing with Chicago ? with you being the man and having to carry the team? Yeah, definitely. The other difference is that in Chicago it's 82 games, here it's eight games and you've got to qualify. These are really like play-off games. Every game if you lose, it really hurts you.

You personally are one of the big reasons to be hopeful about this GB basketball team's prospects at the 2012 Olympics, but we hear you're also pretty good at football. Clearly we need some help there too, so do you think you could be persuaded to switch codes? [Chortling] I think I've got to find out exactly where my skill level is. I haven't played since I was 14. Back then when I played I was really good at it. But it's been a while so I'd really have to test where I'm at.

Small Talk envisages a role for you as a big target man to replace Emile Heskey ... I played midfield and I played striker. I kinda played a little similar to [Patrick] Vieira but a lot of times I ended up playing striker.

You're known to be a big Arsenal fan. Do you think they should sell Cesc Fbregas? I think he's going to stay. I hope he does.

You must move in the same circles ? do you ever hang out with the guys on the team? I used to but I haven't in a while. Back when [Thierry] Henry was there I knew a lot of guys on the team then, I was going to practice and stuff. But the last person I really kept in touch with was Philippe Senderos. But I haven't spoken to him in a while.

What's the worst film you've ever seen? The worst? Nobody ever remembers the worst film they ever saw.

On the contrary, in Small Talk's experience everyone does. Nobody. I remember the best, I don't remember the worst. Damn, what's the worst movie I ever saw? See ? I don't remember the name.

What's the best, then? Recently Avatar was the best I've ever seen. I wanted to go and live there. If I could find Avatar I would leave right away and go live there.

Really? Not put off by the enormous dragons, shiny panthers and hamfisted scripting? I like all that though! If I go to Avatar, I'd have some long hair, I'd connect it to the horse, I'd get on the dragon. I wouldn't need gas. Gas costs a lot of money.

Small Talk likes to hope they're paying you enough in Chicago that you don't have to worry too much about gas money. [Laughs] Yeah, but still. If I'm in Avatar I won't need no money, I won't need no credit cards.

Do you believe in aliens then? I definitely do. I believe it's a big universe, there's something out there somewhere. I think whoever reaches the other one first will probably have the better technology.

Yeah, if they get here first we're probably toast, right? Well if they get here first they'll be able to go away and come back. We won't be able to chase them.

What would you do if you were invisible for a day? Wow. I wouldn't like to be invisible for a day. But if I was ? I'd probably be up to no good. I don't know if I can even say that, but I'd be up to no good.

Spying on people? I wouldn't spy on people but ? uh ? I don't know. You know I wouldn't want to be invisible I don't think. I don't like sneaking up on people.

OK, so you don't want to be invisible, but if you could have one super-power what would it be? I always used to say when I was younger that if I had one super-power I would want to read minds. But the older I got, now I really don't want to read minds because I don't want to know what the other person is thinking.

People think a lot of bad stuff ? Maybe I'd travel through time. I would go back all the way to my ancestors and see how it really was back then. I think I would love it ? it would just show you how they had no worries back then.

What's your favourite vegetable? Man, I hate vegetables.

But you're an athlete Luol, you have to eat a lot of vegetables. No, trust me, I eat a lot of vegetables, but I hate them. It's one of those things, it's like doing sit-ups. I hate to do sit-ups, but you know you're going to look good. So my favourite vegetable ? maybe carrot? Is carrot even a vegetable.

It certainly is. Cheese or chocolate. Chocolate, for sure.

Steak or cake? Cake.

Jam or jelly? Jam or jelly? Jam and jelly are the same thing.

Bah ? Small Talk was attempting to test your British credentials after so long in the States. Nah, I go for jam innit.

Good man. Lastly, can you tell us a joke? Can I tell you a joke? Nah, I can't think of one. I really can't ? you've put me on the spot. Even though I joke a lot, I can't think of one.

How about you tell us about the best locker room prank you've seen in your time as a player? One time a rookie ? I'm not going to tell you his name ? was trying to be smart so what the vets did was they took his clothes from the locker room while he showered after the game. And you know after the game you have nothing there. The equipment guy takes everything away and you have to go out because your family's waiting. But he just stayed there for hours. Eventually the equipment guy, who had gone home, had to come back to the stadium because he just wouldn't leave.

A classic manoeuvre. Thanks for all your time Luol, good luck with the qualifiers. Appreciate it, thanks.

Bethenny Frankel on 'Bethenny Ever After' and Coming From a Place of Yes

'Bethenny Ever After'It's not a stretch to say that Bethenny Frankel's life moves as fast as she talks.

Even though our interview earlier this week was via phone, it wasn't hard to paint the picture of what was going on on the other end: Bethenny, holding her ten-month old daughter Bryn, wandering around the office or living room in the small but well-appointed Tribeca condo seen in her Bravo show 'Bethenny Ever After,' conducting the interview in the vicinity of a speakerphone. Bryn was so close I could hear her cooing in the speaker near the end of the interview, so I said hi to her.

Life is non-stop for the former star of 'The Real Housewives of New York City.' In addition to the Bravo show, which is in its second season chronicling her marriage to Jason Hoppy and new motherhood, she just completed a deal to sell her Skinnygirl brand of low-calorie ready-made cocktails to Beam Global, maker of Jim Beam bourbon, among other products. And on Tuesday, her latest book, 'A Place of Yes: 10 Rules For Getting Everything You Want Out of Life,' hit store shelves.

Michael Vick speaks to prisoners, has a human umbrella holder

Michael Vick has his own Fonzworth Bentley.

While speaking to inmates last weekend at a Florida jail, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback was shaded by an umbrella held dutifully by a prisoner.

Was that a coveted job? Did the guy holding the umbrella have to trade two packs of smokes to land the position? Did the prison offer the service or did Vick request it? And why did he even need a sun umbrella when the daytime high at the prison was 82 degrees? So many questions!

Visit SI.com for more pictures of Vick's return to jail and to read details about the trip (none of which are about the umbrella holder).
