Paul Pierce shines as Boston take 3-2 lead over Lakers in NBA finals

? Captain scores 27 points in 92-86 victory
? Celtics will seal championship with sixth-game win tomorrow

Kobe Bryant's 38 points proved in vain as the Boston Celtics saw off the Los Angeles Lakers to take a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven NBA finals series.

Paul Pierce, the Boston captain, top-scored with 27 points as they won the first three quarters. Boston led 73-65 going into the final period and that proved too great a deficit to make up as the home side moved to within a win of a record 18th NBA championship. Game Six will tip off at 9pm tomorrow in Los Angeles.

Bryant scored 23 of his side's points in succession at one stage in the middle of the match. Only Pau Gasol also got into double figures for the Lakers, contributing 12 points as well as grabbing 12 rebounds.

Pierce, though, was supported by Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo, who scored 18 points apiece.

Boston were in front from the opening quarter, establishing a 22-20 lead before extending their advantage to six points by the halfway stage. That lead became eight points by the end of the third period and they closed out the win.
