Joe Flacco: ?I?m pretty damn good?

Former Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco hasn't wanted for talent during histhree seasonswith the Baltimore Ravens. He's led a run-heavy attack with decent receivers, showed off one of the better deep arms in the league, and developed a familiarity with play action and the shorter-to-intermediate passes that must be a part of every NFL quarterback's repertoire. He's one of the reasons the Ravens are considered to be a perennial Super Bowl contender ? if they can just get past those pesky Steelers.

And as Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun tells us, Flacco isn't lacking confidence, either. When asked on Wednesday about various potshots taken at his person (Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley saying that Flacco will never win a Super Bowl, Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Dhani Jones questioning his ability to handle pressure, and NFL Network ? erm ? 'analyst' Jamie Dukes saying that Flacco doesn't have the right work ethic), Flaco fired right back.

"I think I'm pretty damn good," Flacco told the media at team headquarters. To Woodley's claim, he says things are getting better ? maybe this is the year the Ravens step all over the Steelers for that trip to the big game.

I really don't quite understand it. We've had a good team the last three years and I think I've gotten better each year and played pretty darn good. I really don't understand it. There's nothing you can do about it.

How about Jones' claim that he can't handle pressure of any kind?

I want the ball in my hands. I want to be in control. I want to be in position to lose football games. I want it to be on me. If we lose football games, I want you to be able to look directly at me and say, 'Why did we lose this game?' and I should have a pretty good answer for you. And I want you to be able to look at me and say why did we win this game? In order to do that, you have to have trust in me, and I think we're there.

And Dukes' seemingly meritlessassertion (if there's one thing about Flacco I've never heard questioned, it's his work ethic)?

What motivates me is being the best quarterback in the world. You don't play this game to be average. I play this game to be the best. It doesn't matter what other people say. I think I'm pretty damn good. I don't need to go out and tell everybody that and show it on every given Sunday. I go out there and I play. You can think what you want about me. The bottom line is: I'm going to feel pretty good about myself no matter what you say.

So there! You have to like a quarterback with a chip on his shoulder and the right kind of confidence, especially when he's improved in each of his three NFL seasons, in metrics both traditional and advanced. Something tells me that the Ravens are in very good hands when it comes to the quarterback position.

Michael Vick lands at No. 20 on NFL Network?s Top 100 list

I haven't said much about the Top 100 list that the NFL Network has been unveiling over the past several weeks. To tell you the truth, I haven't thought about it much, either.

It was voted on by players (some players, anyway, though no one seems to know exactly who they were or how seriously they took their voting duties) with no real criteria specified. It makes for interesting television and good discussion points, but it doesn't really mean a whole lot.

It's just a list. A nice, well-presented one, but still, just a list.

But we're pushing along towards the end of it, with players 20 through 11 being announced Sunday night, so we might as well get it on the discussion. Bookending Sunday night's group was Michael Vick at No. 20 and Aaron Rodgers at No. 11.

When it came to sit down and make a list, I'm not sure how anyone came up with 19 players who were better than Michael Vick last season. If it's the best player "of 2011," and not the best players over the last decade or so, then No. 20 isn't just inaccurate, it's kind of silly.

That Vick could have been the 2010 MVP is not an unreasonable thing to say. As a pure passer alone, he should check in ahead of No. 20. His passer rating was 100.2, behind just Rodgers, Philip Rivers and Tom Brady. There were 21 touchdowns against six interceptions and a completion percentage better than 62 percent.

And when you factor in his big-play ability, his sack avoidance, his rushing yards (676) the way opposing defensive coordinators have to gameplan for him, and the fact that he led his team to the playoffs ... who out there has a better argument than Vick?

If you need me to name the playersVick should move ahead, no problem. I'll give you everyone else announced Sunday night, with the exceptions of Aaron Rodgers, Haloti Ngata and Nnamdi Asomugha. Probably a significant portion of next week's top 10, too.

Carolina confirms: No trade for Steve Smith

Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith came into the NFL in 2001. That year, his team went 1-15, and his primary quarterback was Chris Weinke. Two seasons later, the Panthers ended their season justfour points short of a Super Bowl victory, as they missed winning Super Bowl XXXVIII by that much ? losing the game, 32-29, on yet another of those heartbreaking last-second Adam Vinatieri field goals.

Through the next few years, Smith was as good as any receiver in the league. His best year may have been 2005, when he almost singlehandedly pulled up an average offense to meet a great defense halfway. Carolina lost the NFC championship game to the Seattle Seahawks.

Smith had a Pro Bowl season in 2008, when he caught 78 passes for 1,421 yards and six touchdowns, but the decline of the Panthers' offense in 2009 and 2010 scuttled his numbers to a large degree. Smith's 2010 season must have been a nasty flashback to that 2001 year, with Jimmy Clausen playing the part of Weinke and the Panthers finishing 2-14. He caught just 46 passes for 554 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games for an offense that looked decidedly Division III.

That rough year had Smith saying in the offseason that he wanted to be traded to a contender, but after meeting with general manager Marty Hurney this week, Smith now says that he wants to be a "Panther for life."

"For me I'm always going to be a Panther," Smith told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday. "They took a shot on me when I was coming from nowhere and now I'm going into my 11th year in the league. This will be where I retire, whether that's five years from now or one year from now."

Taken in the third round of the 2001 draft out of Utah, Smith took the hard way up, and is now looking to give back. When I interviewed him in mid-July, he talked about how having a young team around him would increase his responsibilities as a mentor.

One of those young players is first overall pick Cam Newton, the hyper-talented but very raw quarterback from Auburn. And when recently asked by Steve Wyche of the NFL Network how he wanted the Smith situation to work out, Newton proved that he's no fool.

"He's extremely credible around the NFL and everybody knows about Steve Smith's situation. I'm going on to say that I really want ? and not just me; so many people around the organization want Steve back. I don't know how else to put it; I put it so many different ways I'm about to speak foreign languages trying to get Steve back. But he's an excellent guy, excellent human being, extremely competitive. After talking to him and working out with him, he's just at a crossroads right now. I will respect him whichever decision that he makes, and hopefully that decision is to stay in Carolina."

Well, good news for a fan base hoping for a major turnaround ? not only have the Panthers spent major coin to retain stars like Charles Johnson, James Anderson and DeAngelo Williams, but Steve Smith is coming back ? and it looks to be for good.

Chad Ochocinco is the newest Patriots reclamation project

They're no longer the New England Patriots. They're Father Belichick's Home for Wayward Youths.

After acquiring defensive tackle/tub of goo Albert Haynesworth earlier in the day, the New England Patriots have now pulled the trigger on a deal that nets them former Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Chad Ochocinco.

[Fantasy Football: Join a league today]

In fairness to The Ocho, he's never been the off-the-field troublemaker that Haynesworth was. But he was an unhappy Bengal (not an unreasonable position) and his attention-grabbing, "look at me!" antics are unlike anything else ever seen in the NFL.

In return, the Bengals get a couple of draft picks, one this year, and one next year. Which picksthey are remain unknown.

The Patriots have unending faith in the stability of their own locker room. With any other team, the immediate reaction to bringing in Haynesworth and Ochocinco on the same day would be something like, "Disaster is imminent." With the Patriots and Bill Belichick, though, the immediate reaction is to fear that he'll turn both guys back into Pro Bowlers and dominate the NFL forever.

Also of interest: As Trey Wingo points out on Twitter, the number "85" (ochenta y cinco, or "ochocinco," if you insist) is already in use in New England by Aaron Hernandez. Either a deal is going to have to be worked out between Ocho and Hernandez (see if you can get more creative than Chris Kluwe, fellas), or Chad's going to have the second-most absurd jersey of all-time.

Of course, Ocho had to share some of the joy about his new destination with fans and friends on Twitter. Check the timeline for some back-and-forth with Willis McGahee that isn't always safe for work, and look below for some highlights of the dialogue after the jump -- he talks with fans old and new, tries to get some free music lessons, and challenges Pacman Jonesto an onlinegame of FIFA 2012.

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: Chad, don't ever change. No matter where you play.

Training camp rosters could grow for 2011

Most of the NFL news day has been dominated by leaking tidbits about how both sides really like each other now, and that a deal is closer to getting done. I don't know how much any of that means, or if it's even true, especially since there are also whispers to the contrary.

One moderately interesting specific thing that's emerged though, is the possibility of expanded training camp rosters. The current limit is 80, but with lost time potentially being a factor, some general managers would like to push that up to about 90 this year. From the NFL Network's Jason La Canfora:

There is concern among many coaches and executives about how fit players will be whenever they report, and the suspicion among many is that there will be a rash of injuries. Teams will need to have enough bodies around to sustain the rush. Furthermore, with undrafted free agency now coming deep in the offseason instead of directly after the draft, the time to work with and evaluate those players will be significantly compromised as well.

To that end, some general managers would support expanding the practice squad by a spot or two as well, though that topic has not been broached by the competition committee to this point.

La Canfora also quotes one general manager as saying that he doesn't know how any other GM would oppose the idea. I can't imagine why they would, either, but I could picture an owner -- Mike Brown of the Bengals comes to mind -- who might have a small fit about having to pay 10 extra guys.

I don't see a downside, really. A team gets to look at an additional 10 guys, and who knows, maybe a diamond emerges from the rough, and one of the extras makes a roster. If not, you've still got 10 more bodies to absorb punishment through training camp and take reps in preseason games that you just want to end.

Ben Roethlisberger weds Ashley Harlan; Merrill Hoge adds labor update

On Saturday, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger married the former Miss Ashley Harlan at Christ Church in Ohio Township, just northwest of Pittsburgh,in a ceremony that was marked by heavy security. However, nobody tried to keep Steelers linebacker James Harrison out of the ceremony, despite his recent disparaging remarks about the quarterback.

"Hey, at least throw a pick on their side of the field instead of asking the D to bail you out again," Harrison said in a recent interview for Men's Journal magazine, blaming the quarterback for the Steelers' 31-25 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV. "Or hand the ball off and stop trying to act like Peyton Manning. You ain't that and you know it, man; you just get paid like he does."

Of course, the big news during the ceremony may have come from former Steelers fullback Merrill Hoge, who dropped this little (unconfirmed) bombshell via Twitter:

Other Steelers luminaries included team owner Dan Rooney and former running back Jerome Bettis. Invited guests were required to show photo identification, as a group of fans camped out to watch the spectacle.

No attendees were available to the media, though several fans spoke to the Associated Press on the scene. "This is the best part of my day," said local resident Dolly Metz. "I know he was supposed to send a limo for me too, but it broke down."

The 29-year-old Roethlisberger married the 26-year-old Harlan, a physician's assistant from New Castle, Pa., after the specter of two sexual misconduct claims against him. Roethlisberger has said that restoring his public image is important to him.

"It certainly is a step in the right direction," observer Linda Moule said. "Like anyone, it's a coin toss on if it will last. This is certainly not Prince William and Princess Katherine."

NFLPA does not vote; claims owners? proposal may violate labor laws

We've reported that the NFL owners have ratified their own proposal at about 7 p.m. ET, and we shared NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith's email to the player reps just before the players association's conference call that took place an hour later. Almost two hours later, the conference call ended, and the news is not good. Not only have the players refused to vote on that proposal (and for a very good reason; they claim not to have even seen it yet), but both Smith and general counsel for the NFLPA Richard Berthelsen believe that the nature of the proposal may violate labor laws.

In short, it's illegal for an employer to coerce employees to form a union, and that's what the NFLPA believes the owners have done in calling a press conference to make it clear that they want an agreement to pass that the players haven't yet seen.

Understandably, the players and the players association aren't all too happy about this turn of events. A source close to the situation told Yahoo! Sports that there's "no way this gets fixed by [Friday] morning. Could [take] a few days just to get it back on course."

From Roger Goodell's post-settlement press conference:

With this ratification and with the ratification of the NFLPA board, we will be prepared to open the training facilities beginning on Saturday, this Saturday. We will then be prepared to start the new league year next Wednesday subject to the full membership of the players ratifying the agreement and recertifying as a union. Obviously you know that we're all under a time constraint. That's one of the reasons we worked to get this agreement completed tonight.

The NFL also is said to want proof that the majority of players have signed their voting cards to indicate the number of votes needed to approve re-certification.

The NFLPA's post-call email (in part) to the player reps:

We received the NFL's proposed procedure for finalizing a settlement. Among other things, it ? Demands that the players re-form as a union and provide evidence by Tuesday, July 26 that a majority of players have signed union authorization cards?

? In addition to depriving the players of the time needed to consider forming a union and making needed changes to the old Agreement, this proposed procedure would in my view also violate federal labor laws. Those laws prohibit employers from coercing their employees into forming a union, and could result in any Agreement reached through the procedure being declared null and void.

ESPN.com is reporting that the new proposal gives the NFLPA until Friday of next week to accept the parameters of the new proposal or negotiate new ones, and that if those parameters aren't accepted, certain aspects of the new deal would revert back to the language of the previous CBA ? a CBA the owners opted out of in 2008 ? for the life of the new CBA. Basically, the players would lose ground and be forced to accept it for the next decade.

"It's not about having a sense of urgency," Buffalo Bills player rep George Wilson told Paul Burmeister of the NFL Network on Thursday evening. "Look ? every football player and every one of our reps' desire is to be back on the field. And ultimately, we want that. But we're not going to allow this to be force-fed to us in such a short period of time. We're supposed to educate ourselves over a five-month period of negotiations, and then accept something that, at the moment, we can't even go in and sell to the rest of the guys in our locker rooms. It's not that there's not a sense of urgency; it's just that we as men first and foremost, and businessmen, are going to make educated and informed decisions. When we feel that we're at that point, then we'll put it to a vote."

'Roseanne's Nuts'Roseanne Barr decided to embrace a bit more of the lifestyle of Hawaii on 'Roseanne's Nuts' (Wed., 9PM ET on Lifetime). So she embarked on a new adventure, learning how to surf.

"What do you think of that, being old and surfing?" the 58-year old asked some of the guys who were there to help. When they told her "old" was all in her head, she retorted, "No, it's in my body, too. Trust me."

She learned a few basic moves and then she was ready to get into the water, but not before taking delight at her friend Greg's swim attire. "Look at your underwear," she laughed.

But not everyone was looking forward to it with the same amount of enthusiasm. Trace James Lehnhoff and Gage Edward had their reservations, and didn't look terribly comfortable in the strip club.

"We were sort of like eagerly anticipating, you know, what kind of girls are going to come out and freak on our laps," said Berkman. Lewis thought Berkman enjoyed herself perhaps a little too much. "I think Sarah actually preferred the female strippers," he said. "I mean, she might want to reconsider this marriage."

Deep Posts, morning edition: Where we go from here ?

?I'm sure we're going to talk a lot more about this in the coming days, weeks and months, but with the abbreviated offseason, the beginning of the NFL season figures to feature some ugly, ugly football. Advantage, defenses and more veteran teams with lower roster turnover.

?The Jaguars are going to have to spend about $35 million to fulfill their obligation to meet the salary cap floor. Expect most of that to go to defense. Here's a list of what they need and what's available.

?Here's a list of fellows who could maybe expect a call from the Seattle Seahawks.

?The Minnesota Vikings, meanwhile, are a few million over the cap, and have to figure out what to do with Chad Greenway, Sidney Rice and Bernard Berrian. Adrian Peterson is heading into the last year of his rookie deal, too.

?The Green Bay Packers also have some players hitting the free-agent market, and they're all more attractive now because it says "Super Bowl champion" on their rsum.

?For the Tennessee Titans, safety Chris Hope could be on the chopping block because of his $7 million 2011 salary. Here, Chris Hope makes the case that he's worth it.

?Mike Klis of the Denver Post goes through the Denver Broncos to-do list.

?It's a really bad year to be an undrafted free agent. Eventually, I think everyone who deserves a look (and there are some good ones) will get it, but they might have to scrap, claw and hang on more than undrafted free agents and other years. There's just not as much time, not as many reps available, and not having had free agency yet, teams don't even know exactly what they need.

Myra Hiatt Kraft, wife of Patriots owner Robert Kraft, passes away

As the lockout negotiations went through a long and very contentious spring and summer, it became clear that New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft became the voice of reason, guiding the hawks and doves through the process. We now know that Mr. Kraft was doing all of that work with a heavy heart.

On Wednesday morning, Myra Hiatt Kraft, Mr. Kraft's wife, passed away after a long battle with cancer at the age of 68. The Krafts wed in 1963 and raised four sons: Jonathan, Daniel, Joshua and David. Jonathan is the president of the Patriots, and has held various titles in the organization since his father purchased the team in 1994.

As Mr. Kraft's Patriots franchise came to redefine NFL success in the time since that purchase, Mrs. Kraft found her calling in philanthropy ? she was highly regarded for her generous spirit. She managed the Robert and Myra Kraft Family Foundation, as well as the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation, which provided millions of dollars to various U.S. and Israeli charities. Mrs. Kraft also served as the first female chairperson of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, which she did from 1995 through 2002, and she was the chairwoman of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies. She also served on the boards of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, the American Repertory Theatre, Brandeis University (where she went to school), and the Brigham and Women's Hospital.

The Patriots had this to say in a statement: "Words cannot express the deep sorrow we feel in learning of the passing of Myra Hiatt Kraft. Myra passed away early this morning after a courageous battle with cancer. We are all heartbroken. The global philanthropic community and the New England Patriots family have suffered a great loss."

Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson added his own thoughts as he arrived in Atlanta for Thursday's owners meetings: "Myra has been very, very sick for a good while now, and just before I left Charlotte, I got the news that she had passed away. I came into the league about the same time that Robert did, and over the years, we've had a unique bond from the fact that we did come in together. Our families are very close, and Myra and my wife were very close, and I'm devastated. My best wishes and hope is that Robert and his family's grief will pass as quickly as it can."

Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork had a severe frustration upon hearing of Mrs. Kraft's passing which spoke to the fact that this story went far beyond any labor battle ? because of the communication embargo between the owners and players, he didn't have an appropriate avenue with which to express his condolences.

I don't even know how to get in touch with Mr kraft to offer my support and condolences.......... a wonderful life lost that I probably wlda had the chance to see again if it wasn't for f'n $$$ problems!! Luv ya Myra "momma"

Sorry guys had to vent myra was a wonderful woman who my wife and I loved dearly #somuchmorethanfootball

It's clear that Mrs. Kraft touched a great many lives, and we would like to add our condolences to the New England Patriots organization and the Kraft family.

As Vince Wilfork said, sometimes it's about so much more than football.

The Shutdown Corner Podcast: NFL Films? Greg Cosell

OK, it's time to take a break from all this labor stuff and talk about the players who will be free agents and trade targets once the Hatfields and McCoys sign off on a new CBA. And who better to do that with than Greg Cosell, the longtime NFL Films game-tape maven, who also serves as senior producer of ESPN's "NFL Matchup" show (and has done so since 1984).

You can read more about Greg's history in this outstanding profile authored by Andy Benoit of the New York Times. Greg also recently co-authored the excellent "The Games that Changed the Game" book with Ron Jaworski and David Plaut. It's an outstanding schematic history of, and evolution guide to, modern professional football. Also, check out Greg's insights on Twitter at @gregcosell.

In this podcast, Greg and I discuss the most intriguing options to switch teams at multiple positions. Based on non-stop analysis of coach's tape (not TV feed, but the "All-22" seen by coaches during the week), Greg shared his thoughts on a number of quarterbacks, including Kevin Kolb, Kyle Orton and Tarvaris Jackson. Then, we move on to running backs, and speculate on just how much this year is the DeAngelo Williams Show with everyone else in the background. Then, receivers ? is Sidney Rice or Santonio Holmes more worth the big bucks? And who's better among second-level guards, Robert Gallery or Daryn Colledge?

Then, we move to defense, taking on the Ray Edwards question ? is Edwards ready to step out of Jared Allen's shadow and be a main man elsewhere as a pass rusher? And which NFC West defensive tackle is more intriguing, Brandon Mebane or Aubrayo Franklin?

Then, the big question: we all know that Nnamdi Asomugha will get the biggest bucks in free agency, but should a team pay a 30-year-old cornerback to play at an elite level for the next five years, no matter how good he is? We finish off with a discussion of the two most interesting free agent safeties, San Diego's Eric Weddle and San Francisco's Dashon Goldson.

It's a great 30-minute free agency primer with the best game-tape guy in the business, so tune in and be enlightened!

NFLPA says there will be no statements re: labor talks on Friday

While everyone eagerly awaits a resolution to the NFL's labor mess, the NFL Players Association has released a statement saying that there will be no news from its side for a specific reason. From NFLPA president Kevin Mawae:

Player leadership is discussing the most recent written proposal with the NFL, which includes a settlement agreement, deal terms and the right process for addressing recertification. There will not be any further NFLPA statements today out of respect for the Kraft family while they mourn the loss of Myra Kraft.

The Friday morning memorial service for Mrs. Kraft, the wife of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, saw an enormous turnout from both sides of the ongoing dispute. Mrs. Kraft lost a long battle with cancerWednesday at the age of 68.

Most of the owners' contingent, along with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, flew up to Boston from the owners meetings in Atlanta to attend, as did NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith from the NFLPA's offices in Washington.

In addition, many Patriots players and coaches, both past and present, were on hand. Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, Drew Bledsoe, Jerod Mayo, Wes Welker, Dan Koppen, Patrick Chung, Sebastian Vollmer and ex-Pats Ty Law and Rodney Harrison were on hand, according to the Boston Globe.

There will most likely be further discussions regarding the proposal ratified by the owners Thursday and initially rejected on principle by the players, but a vote would be a stretch with everything else going on Friday. In the grand scheme of things, it was nice for the NFLPA to back off, respect the legacy of a woman who obviously touched the lives of many players, and understand that there are more important things to be said and done.

NFL Trade Rumors: 5 Minnesota Vikings Who Donovan McNabb Would Improve

The Washington Redskins have agreed on the parameters of a deal to trade Donovan McNabb to the Minnesota Vikings, according to multiple reports.

Now, the only question is whether McNabb can agree to compensation with Minnesota, which is no small hurdle to climb, but one that might be climbed by the time you read this.

So, would this be a good move for the Vikings?

Honestly, I have not been a huge fan of McNabb at any point in his career. I never considered him a true leader, a clutch player, or at times a very accurate passer. He has physical skills for sure, although he clearly doesn't run or isn't as willing to run as he used to.

With all that being said, trading for McNabb and signing him to a new contract would be good for Minnesota, because he will improve several players on the Vikings offense to varying degrees.

The following slides list these players with an explanation of why McNabb would instantly improve their fortunes.

Red Sox Trade Rumors: Ubaldo Jimenez's Price Too High in Wake of Gonzalez Trade

After Theo Epstein broke the bank for Adrian Gonzalez, the Boston Red Sox had essentially pushed their chips to the center of the table.

When you give up a good chunk of your prospect base to land one of the best players in baseball, it handcuffs your moves during the regular season. Boston doesn't have the strongest farm system, but it still has plenty of assets, only the club isn't willing to part for them.

The Red Sox have been linked to the Ubaldo Jimenez talks, but it has become obvious that Epstein isn't willing to further dilute his prospect base with another massive trade before the deadline. Peter Gammons tweeted that Colorado will not be able to get the club's top three-or-four prospects for the star pitcher, and it is a brilliant move from the young executive.

What has made the Red Sox great is their ability to team huge spending with responsible baseball, and Epstein isn't going to break that, even if it would get top pitcher. The Red Sox need to strengthen their farm system, and wildly trading prospects would not benefit the club in the long term.

Yes, Boston is tantalizingly close to another World Series, but the club's window stretches into the foreseeable future, and what has made the Red Sox so deep is their ability to cultivate quality prospects and turn them into Major League talent.

Jimenez is an intriguing prospect for a team like the Red Sox, who could really use another power arm in the starting rotation, but Epstein isn't going to break the bank and scuttle the farm system to do it. Boston has to be responsible, and it is doing that by avoiding serious talks regarding the Colorado pitcher.

Right now, the Red Sox need to focus on getting a bat to bring off of the bench, and stabilizing what has been a rather weak bullpen for most of the season. Boston has the tools to get those deals done, and wouldn't have to give up a king's ransom to fill those needs.

Jimenez would steal headlines, but it wouldn't help the club in the long term. It is extremely hard to win championships without a strong farm system, and Epstein is protecting his prized prospects in order to cultivate the next generation of Red Sox talent.

Ten ways the NFL can make things up to the fans

With the end of the lockout Monday, Roger Goodell said this:

"We know what we did to frustrate our fans over the last several months," Goodell said. "We think through a 10-year agreement that we secured the future of the game to ensure that pledge to bring great football to our fans. I think we have some work to do, though, to make sure they understand that we're sorry for the frustration we put them through the last six months."

Well, I'm here to help. If the Commish is serious about doing the fans a solid, here are 10 suggestions on how to do it.

10. Week 1 of the NFL season? Commercial-free. After that, the commercial/kickoff/commercial sequence can never happen again.

9. Permanent banishment of Brett Favre. We can never be bothered with Brett Favre unretirement rumors again.

8. Franco Harris has to tell the truth about The Immaculate Reception.

7. The NFL Sunday Ticket package should be made available not just on DirecTV, but with every cable and satellite provider, as well as on the Internet. And yes, I see the irony in you asking us for forgiveness by affording us more opportunities to give you our money.

6. It's about time we fixed the "tuck rule," right?

5. Live debate on the NFL Network: Roger Goodell vs. James Harrison. Moderated by Al Davis.

4. Get "Friday Night Lights" back on the air, for 10 more seasons. No, I don't know how you're supposed to do it, but find a way. Tell NBC it can't have your games unless they're as a lead-in to FNL. And if you can't manage that, then Kyle Chandler must be given a 10-year contract to be the head coach of the Houston Texans.

3. Every team gets two roster exemptions for players who are allowed to use steroids.

2. Playing the Super Bowl halftime show this year? Janet Jackson, with the complete understanding that if she wants to, she can do the whole thing topless.

1. The 2012 Pro Bowl is played in Canton. Also, in that game only, biting is legal.

NFL Free Agents 2011: 5 Teams Who Need Ahmad Bradshaw

Ahmad Bradshaw is a rather trending topic with the lockout's recent conclusion, as are many talented potential free agents.

I mentioned in my previous article that Braylon Edwards needs to be the Jets' top priority this offseason, not a luxury item like Nnamdi Asomugha or a 'better' player like Santonio Holmes.

I don't feel the same way about Bradshaw—the Giants, with their rather good depth at running back, can afford to tender Bradshaw and get a draft pick.

Other teams, however, need Ahmad Bradshaw, and here is a rundown of the five that do.

Rookie symposium urges young players to pinch pennies

Given the very temporary nature of NFL careers, it's always a good idea for draft picks to make good decisions with their earliest professional paychecks. This year, given the labor situation and that rookie salaries might be cut dramatically, it's even more important.

Via Alex Marvez and FOX Sports, that's exactly the point that the NFLPA is attempting to hammer home in its rookie symposium this week.

"These players have a tendency to get approached by a lot of people, family and friends," McDonnell told me and co-host Jim Miller on Sirius XM NFL Radio. "We've actually drafted a letter they can use that says, 'I'm going to take the next year getting used to being in the NFL. I'm not going to make any major commitments,' just to give them a little breathing room."

"One of the things we want these young players to realize is the decisions they make in the next one-to-two years are really going to impact their lives forever. We want them to get off to a good start."

Always sound advice, especially for the young player who isn't already independently wealthy by virtue of having played football at USC or Ohio State.

In other words, instead of the Maybach, maybe you go with a roomy little Nissan with decent gas mileage. Maybe the giant pendant with your uniform number could be zircon-encrusted. And maybe you should tell Cousin Elroy that he should find another financial backer to open the arcade/massage parlor/nacho bar he's always dreamed of.

Kidding aside, though, it's too easy to judge something like this from afar. "Oh, you've got too much money, boo hoo." But it's got to be a really difficult thing to be approached by so many people, especially ones you've known all your life, all of whom have ideas on what you should do with all this new money, which might have to last you for a while.

I can envision it being very easy to make one bad decision, or trust the wrong person just once, and then pay for it for a very long time.

Cesar Cielo Video: Watch Brazilian Swimmer Butterfly His Way to Gold

Swimming is a mix of physical talent and pure rhythm that makes moving through the water as easy as can be. If you are a world-class athlete, that is.

While most of us doggy paddle around, these men are setting record paces and crushing world records on a regular basis. Today's swimmers are bigger and stronger than ever before, and the times are showing the difference.

For the 50 meter Butterfly Final at the 14th FINA World Championships, the excitement was palpable with the winner unclear, but the announcer leading into the video picks the winner and is 100 percent right.

Cesar Cielo Filho is a Brazilian swimmer who was favored by many to steal the show, and judging by the reaction on his face and the tears rolling from his eyes, he did just that.

The emotional swimmer captured his first World Championship, then proceeded to cry his way into the hearts of everyone watching. He’s actually still crying now, though.

This is the hero who witnessed Lorenzo Neal?s DUI

Former Bengals, Titans and Chargers fullback Lorenzo Neal was involved in the least eventful DUI arrest of all-time over the holiday weekend. It was a single-car accident, Neal was barely over the legal limit, did not go to jail, had no passengers, and no one was hurt, not even his truck.

But that didn't stop ABC 30 in Fresno from pulling together a 2-minute, 25-second story about it, and thank goodness it didn't, because witness Kevin Spring needs to be heard.

I wish this man could be at every crime scene in America providing an eye-witness account. With the budding Rollie Fingers mustache, the American flag bandana, the perm, and the short shorts there is no local news report he would not enhance tremendously.

He's like a real-life Terry from Reno 911. I'm thinking of including his picture with every Shutdown Corner post, just because.

Here's the original news report:

Tony Romo?s wedding video trailer hits the Internet

And here you thought the trailer for "The Dark Knight Rises" would be the best movie preview you'd see this week. The video of Tony Romo and Candice Crawford's wedding is apparently so grandiose in scale that it warrants its own teaser.

1. Any fears I had about mocking the wedding video of a happy, newlywed couple were alleviated by the consecutive shots of somebody reading about the wedding in a newspaper, Romo meticulously grooming his stubble and then having his cuffs buttoned by a grown man in a tuxedo.

2. There appeared to be a lot of seats under the tent. Given recent events in Dallas, I pray they were all ready in time.

3. The flowers and drinks are expensive, sure, but what gets you every time is acquiring the rights to a Coldplay song for the trailer to the wedding video.

4. Smiling faces from the bridesmaids, except for the one on the left, who has total bridal envy. Either that or she's disgusted with the fact that she has a Coldplay song stuck in her head.

5. This trailer sets the record for most usage of a Steadicam outside of a Scorsese film. All kidding aside, it's a beautifully shot video.

6. The surprise at the end of the ceremony was excellent. It's good to know Romo got a chance to celebrate with confetti once in his life.

7.In all seriousness, Coldplay?

8. Really, though, it looked like a lovely wedding and I'm not just saying that because of the cigar-rolling station. Congratulations to the happy couple and to the attendees who managed not to have their embarrassing dancing make the final cut of the trailer.

The Shutdown Corner Interview: Steve Smith, Pt. 1

Steve Smith has been one of the best receivers of his generation, and he's done that with perhaps the least amount of help any elite receiver has had in the last decade. Among the quarterbacks who have thrown to him, there's been just one Pro Bowl season (Jake Delhomme, 2005), and never a complementary receiver of note since Mushin Muhammad went to Chicago after the 2004 season. He was drafted by the Carolina Panthers just in time for their 1-15 season in 2001, and he was the team's offensive catalyst in the following half-decade, when the franchise almost won one Super Bowl and came up a game short of going to another.

In recent years, Smith's challenges have been different, but similar in some ways ? after a number of personnel misfires from the Panthers' front office, the team finished 2-14 in 2010 and John Fox, the most successful coach in team history, left for the Denver Broncos. If he stays with the Panthers in 2011, Smith will be in line to catch passes from three different primary quarterbacks in three seasons ? from Delhomme, to Jimmy Clausen, to first overall pick Cam Newton. Smith still has it on the field, but the stats don't always tell the story because the guys throwing to him have been a mixed bag in recent years.

But when we recently talked to Smith about his offseason and a host of other things, the main focus was about the off-field challenges he's been facing. In the first part of this two-part conversation, we started out by talking about his recent work with Powerade, and then, things got deep.

Shutdown Corner: First of all, I wanted to ask what you're doing with Powerade ? it seems like a cool initiative with the Triple Play Challenge. How did you get involved, and how has the experience been for you?

Steve Smith: Oh, it's been great. We did this in Charlotte with about 200 kids from the local Boys and Girls Clubs, and Powerade has really launched a nationwide campaign with the Boys and Girls Clubs. It's really a part of the future for a lot of NFL players, a lot of doctors, just a lot of people promoting eating healthy, staying active, and developing positive relationships. I think those things are really important ? they're the basis and the foundation when you're operating [in life] and in the business world. Just to have that lifestyle.

SC: I know the NFL has had their PLAY 60 campaign for a long time ? have you been involved with that as well?

SS: I've done Play 60; I've done a lot of stuff. The United Way ? I'm really active in that as far as financially giving and just being around activities that are helped by that, because I know it's important. I also know that the efforts of the companies like Powerade are doing now didn't exist when I was growing up. So, these kids get the opportunity to do it ? I think it's fantastic, and I don't want to miss the opportunity to experience it with them.

SC: I usually ask players how they've been spending the lockout, but your offseason has been different in that your wife, Angie, had a major health scare ? how is she doing, and how are you holding up?

SS: For me, the lockout started with my son doing a soccer camp in London. He went out there and did pretty well, and when we got home, that's when it all went downhill. My wife was feeling a little under the weather, she went to the doctor, and they said her white blood cells were low. They said it was low iron and this and that, and her blood cells kept getting lower.

At first, she was diagnosed with mono, and then after two weeks, she was diagnosed with lupus. They needed to get her in with a rheumatologist as soon as possible. Psychologically, it was tough ? it was just one of those phone calls you don't anticipate getting at 8:00 in the morning, at the beginning of the week. Our kids had just gotten out of school ? it was tough, and scary, and something that we didn't really know about.

So, we did research on it and took the approach that whatever she has, this is where I need to be, and this is the most important thing. Because after football, after the money and all that stuff ? when you walk out of the stadium after a win or a loss ? for me, I walk out of the stadium with my family. If walking out of the stadium last year was the last time, then so be it, because I had a greater reward waiting for me at home that no money can buy. This was my wife ? my companion for the last 11 years now.

She's been with me though all the "interesting" things that have happened to me throughout my career ? broken ankle, broken arm, even in college when I broke my neck ? she's been with me through all those things. For me to not stop what I was doing, and direct the right attention to what she deserves and needs, I wouldn't be doing my wife or my children honor.

SC: How is she doing now?

SS: She did her checkup on Wednesday, and she's doing well. They just have to monitor her, watch her and do checkups for the next year, and we're just chugging along.

SC: That's great news. Moving to football a bit, and I talked with Larry Fitzgerald about this a few months ago ? that challenge facing an elite receiver when the quarterback situation changes or degrades. You have a guy you're used to in Jake Delhomme, and then this new bunch of young quarterbacks come in, led by Jimmy Clausen, and the offense kind of stops. What was that challenge for you, knowing that the quarterback position was going to be a struggle, and that it would probably affect what you were able to accomplish?

SS: Whenever you implement a new coach, new system, new player, it's a learning curve ? it's a process. One guy may put his right foot down first, and the guy before him for five years puts his left foot down first. Everyone has their own individual habits, and you just have to learn each other's habits. Each player has their own individual process that they go through, and each year, a new habit is built in each player, for good or bad. You just have to work through those processes and the transitions and all that stuff.

You can make a cake with the instructions right there, or you can do it from memory. Add a bit of this or that, and you can change the taste dramatically. Ultimately, you just have to have everything working together, so that everything can work well, and you can be productive.

People don't really care what's going on in your home life, when you line up and they've spent their hard-earned money to come to the game ? all they care about is whether their team is productive, and that the players they root for are winning. That's the truth, so you've just got to work through those things and play ball.

SC: And for the second straight year, the Panthers have taken a quarterback they believe to be the franchise guy, which is unusual. Jimmy Clausen gets one season as a second-round pick in 2010, and then the Panthers select Cam Newton first overall in 2011. How did you think Jimmy did under the circumstances, and what have you seen of Cam? What's your overall take on that current situation?

SS: I think Cam said it best ? "You only have one shot at greatness." And everybody has their shot ? they either make it or they don't. You know what they say ? 'Don't tell me about the pain, just show me the baby." And that's for everybody ? it's a production-based business, and if you don't produce, they'll replace you. One day I will be replaced, and I understand that, too.
